What really matters? Who are we?

We are so pitiful and full of pride to think we have had power. Even though the most mighty and worst of us have perpetrated and prolonged wars which killed many millions, consider the fact that the Spanish Flu likely killed more people than all the conflicts in human history... take a second to let that sink in; we have only just begun to wield the weapons and wizardry of true power and, yet, have done such wrong making so many mistakes without them. Is humanity worthy of power? I think not, because it craves power. Indeed, the will to power may be built into life. How that power is garnered and wielded is another story. For now, I think it better to return to the simplicity of our grandfather's grandfathers and slowly come to terms with ourselves, our new technologies, and with the fate of life on our Earth- in that order.

This world is not so different from those before, because humanity has been so slow to change. Don't delude yourself and others with denying this fact. Imposition of law and living in the law are different reality. We have rightfully moved from a material based wealth standard to a knowledge based wealth standard. Yet, consider the Library of Alexandria and the burgeoning knowledge based society that fostered it. How quickly was the collective knowledge of humanity burned away by heathens declaring their might as right. How pitiful is humanity to think it has tasted true power or that it has claim to anything but itself. Consider the fact that the Spanish flu probably killed more people than all human conflicts in history... imagine that for a minute. Though we've reigned in disease externally, we've let internal disease fester. More people die from suicide than human conflict. The looming battles of humanity which have been present throughout all time, manifesting themselves in various manners, are those of the nature of man and his relation to himself, his kind, and the earth. We glaze over these problems as individuals because they seem impertinent, distracted as we are in our 'knowledge based society.' How can we as individuals hope to comprehend, let alone take responsibility for the collective actions of humanity and its effect on the biosphere. We glaze over these problems as a whole because we fear admitting our lack of evolution or the probabilities of regression. Further, what more can the collective do-gooders do than say 'bad' and shake their metaphorical finger at the more naive elements of society. Education works on the mind, to varying degrees in different types of people, but it does little to the heart. The heart of man is still full of beautiful, magical, transcendent duplicity... perhaps it will always be so, perhaps it must needs be so.

But none of this matters, the earth will be hit by a comet in 2033 which will decimate civilization and the earth... there's simply not enough time to deal with anything but yourself.
