AGE ICE 5: SHOCK OF WORLDS. THE MOMENT OF CLOSING A FRANCHISE. - MOVIE REVIEW

On July 22, 2016, the fifth installment of the well-known franchise of these prehistoric animals was premiered. This time the title of it is "Ice Age: Collision course" (translated into Spanish as Ice Age: clash of Worlds), which "tries" to reinvent itself and brings us a new story full of characters and several elements that make us think that this saga is already screaming to end. The film was produced by Blue Sky Studios and distributed by 20th Century Fox.

SYNOPSIS

In this new installment, Scrat, this squirrel emblem of all the films, is trying to find again a place in which to deposit his beloved acorn. Because of this, he mysteriously finds a spaceship with which he accidentally travels to outer space only to be the cause of the disaster that will scourge the earth at any moment: the arrival of a new Asteroid to destroy everything in its path.

On Earth, obviously, are Sid, Manny, Diego and company, who in addition to dealing with this great problem that lies ahead, have to deal with their own family problems, love and many others that will be presented along of the movie. The gang is joined by Julian, Morita's boyfriend and again Buck, this peculiar weasel who has participated in the third installment of this saga, which will be a guide to stop this Asteroid (since he is the only one who has the means), but he is also going to attract a trio from Dakotaraptor who are going to be the main “antagonists” of the story.

ANALYSIS

Characters

Before we begin, we will list all the characters that appear. Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie, Shinra, Morita, Julián (new member of the pack) and Buck are present. One of the great problems that this film had is that of the number of characters that have the same and the little time they had for them to have a decent development (an hour and a half of film is little time for all those characters named above) . As if that were not enough, one aspect that stood out in the previous installments was that there was a story behind each new member that joined the group and not only appeared in a forced way to meet the needs (to name it in some way) of a member who was already. To this we also add that the main problem (the number of characters), affects characters that are already historical, such as Diego, who along with Shinra (his partner, who appeared in the previous installment) failed to contribute anything to the film, remaining as flat characters and wasting everything they had previously achieved. Finally, characters who finished in a decent way in some previous installment, as would be the case of Buck, return to give us a poor image.

Comic moments

If there is something that characterizes the rest of the movies, or at least the first ones that came out, they were the great comedy moments very well taken thanks to this group of characters; sometimes with well-armed jokes, other times with specific moments that took us by surprise. On this occasion all that they achieved was lost and we could see a succession of bad jokes and moments that led nowhere, trying to be funny, did not achieve their goal.

Entertainment

If there is one aspect in this type of movies that can not be missed is to entertain, they can fail in several aspects, but it is necessary that we, the spectators, enjoy the film despite these failures. And as you guessed, this new installment is not even entertaining, and can therefore be as mentioned above. Although it is possible that the little ones can have fun (which is what the movie aims at), but not much more than that.

Anyway, I think it is time to close a franchise that had started quite well and that with the running of the movies was worn out until it became what it is now. Giving it a final point would be necessary to be able to focus on new projects and ideas other than those of reusing this group of characters.
