The Bible tells how Nebuchadnezzar, tyrant of Babylon, conquered Jerusalem, took King Joachim and his entire family captive, and put Zedekiah as King in his place, and with this came the first deportation of the Jews to Mesopotamia. It was in this context that the preaching of the priest Ezekiel began, because this priest was among the first deportees.
And God made Ezekiel a prophet, and called him "son of man" so that everyone in his nation would know that there was a spiritual sentinel among them. And in this way God spoke to the prophet to teach and instruct the common and simple people: "I will open your mouth and you shall say to them, ´This is what the Sovereign LORD says. Whoever will listen let them listen, and whoever will refuse let them refuse´; for they are a rebellious people" Ezekiel 3:27.
And Hezekiah, as a prophet of God, taught many teachings. Hezekiah compared Judah to that vineyard that is thrown into the fire (Ezekiel 15), because Jerusalem had given itself over to idolatry and lies.
But the prophet also taught about conversion, and the change of heart, because for the prophet each person was responsible for their own behavior, sin and righteousness are life choices, and so Ezekiel taught:
"Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. Put all your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O people of Israel? For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!" Ezekiel 18:30-32.
And after teaching about individual responsibility Ezekiel taught about hope, and prophesied the arrival of Cyrus the Great, the benefactor of Israel, and with him the restoration of divine blessings.
