I'VE CREATED A MONSTER!!! ... Now You Can Too!

Today's efforts for a 1st birthday party!

Really pleased with this cute little monster - here you can see how it's done, and perhaps create one of your own!

I had made the features and lettering in advance to allow for drying time, these are just basic fondant shapes fixed onto cake pop sticks for secure insertion into the cake after frosting. There are no rules for your little monster, so get stamping out a few eyes and teeth and you'll be away.

To make this size cake I made a 12oz Victoria sponge mix and them split it into 5 x 7" sandwich tins - I was going for height on this one!

You will also need one quantity of buttercream (as per my earlier post "The Cake Lady #28 ... Top Buttercream Recipe).

Start out by placing your cake on a board or plate, and fill alternate layers with buttercream and raspberry jam, or any filling you like really.

Take a serrated knife and carve around the top layer to make a slight dome, as shown above. If your cake is already doned, you might want to skip this step.

Now, 'crumb coat' the outside in a very thin layer of buttercream, making sure there are no gaps. Then refridgerate for half an hour (I usually tidy up the crumbs at this point!).

You now have a good base shape for a monster, minion, or owl! See my other posts for inspiration...

If you want to you can cover your board in fondant and add a ribbon for extra colour at this point:

Colour the remainder of the buttercream blue, or whatever colour you want your monster to be! There will be quite a lot so the easiest way to fill the bag is to fold it over a big glass or jug:

At this stage I would also recommend double-bagging as so:

Use any type of large star nozzle, you will get a good effect!

Starting at the back (for practice!), pipe 'blobs' around the bottom of the monster. Continue until the whole cake is covered:

Now your monster will look 'fuzzy' but naked! Add your pre-made eyes and teeth and you're done :-)
