Miriam Makeba aka. Mama Africa has always been one of my favourite afro-soul and afro-folk singers. Her powerful voice aged gracefully throughout the decades, symbolising the struggle for freedom and equality until the very end!
The peak of her career came around late 60's, when pop hit Pata Pata was released, that brought her instant fame. But just year later she married Stokely Carmichael, a prominent leader of SNCC, and later a member of The Black Panther Party, which he eventually denounced.
Politics aside, it was a beginning of a very creative period for MM, who kept releasing a string of well-received albums such as A Promise or Malaika on different labels, practically till the end of her life.
However - and here's a twist - she also had a very talented daughter, who followed in her footsteps as a singer, joining forces with a little known southern soul voice, Judy White, on an obscure 1967 single Runnin' Out.
Four years later, still barely known by anybody, she cut her IMO fieriest track, Do You Remember Malcom?, with her husband Harold Nelson Lee, that was later included by her mother on a rare 70's compilation Myriam Makeba & Bongi, and eventually resurfaced on a German compilation Black & Proud.

Miriam Makeba has a great voice and I liked this funky old soul tune even though I never heard it before. I am a big fan of Pata Pata though; that song rocks! Thanks for sharing this. :)

Pata Pata was her breakthrough hit although I think she had much better ones coming later!
