User Feeds
As the number of reddit users grows, so does the number and size of its subreddits. For users who join many communities, the result is a user feed that looks less like the so-called "front page of the internet" and more like a Twitter feed. Posts from all of the user's communities mix together into a massive melting pot, like a newspaper without sections where "Lifestyle" and "Global Affairs" are thrown together. However, there is a solution: Custom Feeds.
Custom Feeds
Custom feeds separate subreddits into separate feeds, like categories, so that users can view posts only in that category. Each custom feed is made up from multiple subreddits, and only shows posts from the selected communities. All it takes to create a custom feed is a title and a few select subreddits. Once created, the custom feed is like a new subreddit, or multireddit. Each subreddit's posts are shown in the custom feed, regardless of whether the user is part of the subreddit or not.
Front Page
Browsing the front page can be like a slot machine, users browse through post after post waiting for the "win" of finding something interesting. Instead of joining communities, users can instead include the subreddits in custom feeds. Subscribing to communities without joining allows users to clear the front page, so that nothing is shown until a specific custom feed is selected. Separating subreddits makes browsing more purposeful and less distracting.
