My Thanksgiving break is coming to a close, and I've been reflecting over what I spent my time doing. A little grading, a lot of eating, and some obsessing.... over Freddie Mercury from Queen. I watched the recently release Bohemian Rhapsody movie, a biopic of Queen, and loved it so much that I went home and watched a documentary. Or two. And then I spent the rest of the week watching more documentaries. And googling some more.
I'm not entirely certain why he has captured my imagination the way he has. I liked Queen prior to the movie, but they weren't a band that I would regularly put on. Mercury died of AIDS in 1991, but he probably contracted the disease in the early 80's. According to the documentaries, there was no such thing as "safe sex" at the time, because they didn't realize that sex could be dangerous. I'm not sure how true that is- some version of the condom has existed since the times of the Romans. But, prior to that, I don't think anyone believed that sex could be fatal.
At this point, I know that I appreciate his humor, his sense of play with words (see the gifs above), his energy on stage, and ultimately, his life and the lessons we can learn from that. His epitaph reads that he was a "lover of life", and the more I learn, the more evident that is.
