I blame Auguste Compte, the "father" of social science. In reality there is no such thing as social science. Science requires rigid standards that cannot exist in social sciences. This was only a hiccup to Compte, whose plan was to see that someday social sciences would eclipse the hard sciences in importance. Looks like he got his wish.
