The second accident in two days: this time the territory of the Ionian Islands is the site of the tragic event. Previously, there was a disaster in the Aegean Sea, dozens of migrants are still missing.
At least seven people have died in the sinking of a sailboat with about a hundred migrants on board northwest of Crete. About 90 other refugees had managed to reach a rocky island, said a spokesman for the Greek coast guard. The accident occurred Thursday near the small island of Antikythera. A rescue operation has been launched, he said.
Greek mainland or Italy as destination
Three migrants had already drowned Wednesday when another boat sank in the Aegean Sea near the island of Folegandros. Dozens of people who were on board the boat are still missing.
The migrants keep trying to reach the Greek mainland or Italy from the Turkish Aegean coast or even from other states in the eastern Mediterranean. The Greek Coast Guard estimates that around 11,000 people have managed to reach Italy via this route in recent months. There are no official figures on how many people have died in the process.
Migrants want to avoid Greek registration camps
Refugees embark on the dangerous journey because they want to avoid a long stay in registration camps on islands in the eastern Aegean Sea when crossing from Turkey to Lesbos, Chios or other Greek islands. However, due to the long journey through the Mediterranean Sea south or north of Crete, there are often engine failures or leaks on the often outdated boats that smuggling gangs sell to people.
