đâAaâishah (radiallahuaniah) said that the Prophet (sallAllaahu âalayhiwasallam) âused to observe i'tikaaf during the last ten days of Ramadaan until Allaah took his soul, then his wives observed iâtikaaf after he was goneâ. Bukhaari. There was scholarly consensus that iâtikaaf is prescribed in shareeâah,
âUndoubtedly iâtikaaf in the mosque is an act of worship prescribed in Ramadaan and at other times but observing it in Ramadaan is better than at other timesâ.
đThe basic principle is that iâtikaaf is Sunnah, not obligatory, unless one made a vow to do it, in which case it becomes obligatory, because the Prophet (sallAllaahu âalayhiwasallam) said: âWhoever vows to obey Allaah, let him obey Him, and whoever vows to disobey Him, let him not disobey Him.â Bukhaari. ââUmar (radiallahuaniu) said: âO Messenger of Allaah, during the Jaahiliyyah I vowed to observe iâtikaaf for one night in al-Masjid al-Haraam.â He said: âFulfil your vow.ââ
âIT IS WRONG FOR A MAN OR WOMAN TO OBSERVE IâTIKAAF IN THE HOUSE.
Iâtikaaf is only valid if done in the mosque, âshe does not have the right to observe i'tikaaf in her house, because Allaah says âwhile you are in Iâtikaaf (i.e. confining oneself in a mosque for prayers and invocations leaving the worldly activities) in the mosquesâ, and because the wives of the Prophet (sallAllaahu âalayhiwasallam) asked him for permission to observe iâtikaaf in the mosque, and he gave them permissionâ.
âAnd do not have sexual relations with them (your wives) while you are in Iâtikaaf (i.e. confining oneself in a mosque for prayers and invocations leaving the worldly activities) in the mosquesâ[2:187]
Al-Nawawi said in al-Majmooâ (6/480): âIt is not correct for a man or a woman to observe i'tikaaf anywhere except in the mosqueâ. This is the view favoured by Shaykh Ibn âUthaymeen in al-Sharh al-Mumtiâ, 6/513. Men and women are equal in this regard.
Ibn Qudaamah said in al-Mughni:
đ âA woman has the right to observe iâtikaaf in any mosque, and that is not subject to the condition that it be a mosque where prayers are performed in congregation, because that is not obligatory upon herâ.
