Sunday rituals

in religion •  7 years ago

Growing up, sundays for me was just that day mom would dress me up real nice, press a few bucks in my hands (for offering), take me to the children department where I would sit with the other kids and we would listen to this grown up telling us how Jesus loves us and wants the best for us.

After a few minutes, we would give the money we came with, sing some religious songs, play and go home.
We never knew why we did these things nor did we understand the significance of these religious acts. But we did enjoy every moment of it, because to us (children) it was just another social gathering where you meet and play with your friends.

Few years later, I started asking questions concerning the sunday rituals, why we did all these things and why they were important and all I got were ambiguous answers from my teacher. And so I decided to leave the children department and join the adult section of the church. I was pertinacious and resolute to get my answers and.... I got it.

Only then did I realise.... The more questions I asked, the fewer the answers I got and there was always a whole lot that was shrouded in mystery. And then, I remembered the words of the philosopher, Christian James, " If one does not know very much, he does not know how much he does not know, but if he knows a great deal, he becomes aware of how much more there is that he still does not know". And so, I decided to leave it all and let the sleeping dog lie, lest I fall into a spiral of mysteries.
