I've been watching these days on Netflix a series that today is already one of my favorites, not only for the stories told in it, but for who present it as well. I'm talking about the documentary series: "The Story of God with Morgan Freeman." The topics covered in it call me a lot of attention because they treat spirituality in a more "rational" way, so to speak, without being biased or appealing to sensationalism.

In one of the episodes, it was discussed the miracles. What would be a miracle? Do miracles exist or are they just luck? How do we prove a miracle? What is the difference between miracle and luck?

I am Christian and the question of miracles is very present in the entire history of God's people, as the Bible tells us. The deliverance of Noah and his family from the flood in his Ark, the opening of the Red Sea by Moses, the miracles of Jesus Christ ... regardless of whether some believe it or not, whether these facts were true or not, I understand that being human being is always in search of miracles. He wants, feels the need for a miracle in his life.

The miracle (in my view and according to what I learned during my short studies of theology) is that along with happiness and freedom, other factor that give meaning to our life, our existence.

In one of the excerpts from this episode about miracles, a phrase put forth by a mathematician interviewed by Morgan Freeman "hammered" in my mind. He asked what a miracle would be, he answered: "Miracles are probabilities".

For this mathematician, the miracle is a mathematical question and can be predicted by probabilities. There is a numerical chance of a miracle happen.

Here is my comment.

In some situations we can confuse miracles with luck and here we must define what each one would be. I will not use a dictionary for this because reason and logic can translate and separate both.

Miracles are extraordinary, mystical events that go beyond human reason beyond what we can see. These are events that make us stop and think about how small we are in front of someone or something much bigger, more powerful and that has a force that no man on earth would be able to have.

Luck is probability (here I agree with the mathematician). Luck is something very much related to gaming, material goods (this is my understanding and definition of luck). Lucky to have found a job that pays me well, lucky to have managed to close that contract we wanted to close, lucky to have found and bought the "house of our dreams."

With my definition / vision / opinion about what would be luck and exposed above I do not exclude the fact that for this luck to happen, it has not had a divine interference and has traces of miracles. Maybe luck does not be at least a little miracle? It may be, but the miracle is something much greater.

Blind see again, paralyzed walking again, deaf hear again, dead come back to life, lepers cured of their infirmities. Walk on the waters, calm the storms, multiplication of breads and fish to feed thousands of hungry, turn water into wine.

There has been a man who has shown on several occasions that miracles really and definitely are not probabilities.

i don't think classifying a miracle as luck or probability in any way diminishes its power. if anything, it uses reason to affirm the miraculous! how lucky one must be to be healed! what tremendous odds have been overcome! how lucky we are to be anything at all!

Great insights @jsantana.

While we might have differing (or sometimes clashing) beliefs and opinions, what I can say is non-believers will always find a way to question and contradict God's miracles, and refer to these miracles as just 'luck'.

However, "Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed."

Exactly @michelleast. Unfortunately, many believe that reason faith are distinct things, but it is not true. Reason is always confirmed by faith. I will deal with this in a next post. Thank you!
