Summary of Deut 11-16
Deut 11
God gave a charge to the children of Israel through Moses, to remember God when they get to the land of promise and to obey Him. They are to imprint God’s word on their heart, and also teach their children. Also God set before them a blessing, if they obey Him; and a curse, if they choose to disobey Him.
Deut 12
God instructed the children of Israel to completely destroy the nations in Canaan, so that they don’t get corrupted by them. He instructed them to worship Him in the place He Himself will later appoint when they get to the Promised Land. He instructed them about slaughtering animals to eat.
Deut 13
God condemned false prophets, and idolatry among the children of Israel. Such individuals are to be put to death. “…you must purge the evil from you.” (verse 5)
Deut 14
God instructed the children of Israel about forbidden practices as regards burial rites, and eating unclean foods. They are not to eat any carcass. Instructions about festival tithes was also given.
Deut 15
This chapter contains instructions about the cancellation of debts, lending to the poor, release of slaves, and consecration of firstborn animals to God.
Deut 16
Instructions were given to the children of Israel concerning the Feasts of Passover, the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost), and the Feast of Booths (Tabernacles). All the males are to appear before God three time in a year, and should not come empty-handed. He also instructed them on appointment of judges and officials. The chapter ended with God forbidding idolatry.
