Who will roll away the stone?
This was the question asked by the women in pure agitation and worry as succinctly stated in Mark 16:3.
These women carried with them precious sweet smelling ointment, which they wanted to shower on Jesus as a mark of their love and care. As they went to the tomb, they intoned, βWho will roll away the stone?β The tomb of Jesus was covered with a large stone, which slipped into a groove cut in the bedrock of the entrance of the tomb. It was easy to cover the tomb, but difficult to uncover it.
Though mentally and spiritually strong, women are not known to be muscular as men who could with much effort roll away any stone. Alas, when these women got to the tomb, to their amazement, the stone had been rolled away and there was no trace of Christ's "lifeless" body.
The gospel of St Matthew captures the account of what happened on the resurrection morning , βAnd behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended, and came and rolled back the stone from the door and sat on it. His countenance was like lightening, and his clothing as white as snowβ (Mt.28: 2-3). This account reports that the angel of the Lord rolled away the stone that covered the tomb. As if to show his awesome strength, the angel sat upon the stone after rolling it away. Thus, when the women looked, they saw that the stone had been rolled away. That is, the CONCERNS of the women were taken care of by God, even before they got to the tomb!
I will not fail to appreciate the faith of these women, however little. Knowing that the stone was there, knowing it had been sealed upβ¦ they must have believed, or AT LEAST HOPED at the back of their minds that something had happened. That something had finally gone right. Because they were already on their way when they asked the question, βWho will roll the stone away from the entrance?β
This is a wake up call for us all, if God has given you a vision, a purpose, a goal and you have pictured the end of it, why back down on the face of obstacles? The disciples in yJohn 20: 1-9, did not believe the scriptures , though they had been told before hand. The bridegroom had been with them and had taught them in detail, yet they insisted on seeing the empty tomb first before they believed. I guess it sounded too good to be true....lol. They had forgotten that though the most powerful name in the world is Jesus, God honours His WORD MORE THAN HIS NAME.Psalm 138: 2. Imagine such efficacy!
I tell you solemnly friends, your resurrection morning will come and it will be too good to be true. After the darkness, turmoil and frustration- just when your enemies are about to rejoice at your supposed ruin, God will show up for you and make you sit upon your problems, cladded in your victorious apparel- shinning and glimmering in greatness.
The grave is indeed empty.
Happy Easter Steemians.
