What is a Mediator?

1 Timothy 2:5

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

What is a mediator? There seems to be some confusion among Christians about this simple word.

MEDIA'TOR, noun: One that interposes between parties at variance for the purpose of reconciling them.

A mediator is one who stands in between. The title of mediator does not assume any other rank or position other than standing between. Moses was a mediator between God and Israel. He stood between God and men to receive and deliver God's word to Israel. Moses and the law were a shadow of things to come in Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the one who now stands between God and the whole world. He is our mediator.

Many Christians today have been lead to believe that Jesus is God. Not only is the view not Biblical, but it's not logical. God cannot be the mediator because mediation requires standing between two or more parties. Since God is one, He cannot stand between Himself and another.

Galatians 3:20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.

If Jesus is God then he is not a mediator between God and men. Direct communication and/or reconciliation is not mediation. God reconciles us to himself through Jesus Christ. There is a clear distinction between God and Christ.

The verse from 1 Timothy 2:5 could not be more clear, there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. There are many men but only one God. God chose a perfect man, His only begotten Son, to be our mediator: The one who will stand before God in our place.

But do we believe this over the Bible? It's clear, God is one and Jesus is His Son. The Father is God alone, His son was sent to atone. Two beings. You have to use some pretty tricky philosophy to make it work, this is why Trinitarians call it a mystery.

Ephesians 1:3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

John 20:17
Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
