Timeline with Commentary of the Biblical Account of the 40 days that the Resurrected Christ spent on the earth.

It must be noted that this is compiled from 4 different Authors writing often years after the Facts yet with Complete Harmony as their Accounts Interact! This simple Fact on Complete Harmony of the Four Gospels gives Strong Credence to the Fact Of the Resurrection of the Dead and the Inspiration of the Biblical Accounts!

A. Mary Magdalene and other women depart for the tomb but do not enter.
John 20:1
1 ¶ THE first [day] of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
Luke 24:1
1 ¶ NOW upon the first [day] of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain [others] with them.

Mark 16:1
1 ¶ AND when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the [mother] of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

Matthew 28:1
1 ¶ IN the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first [day] of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

Commentary: These women probably began their journey at Bethany which is the home of the sisters Mary and Martha of Bethany. According to the traditions of the Greek and Orthodox Churches, there are seven women in this group that journeyed to the tomb. They are: Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany, Martha, Susanna, Joanna, Salome and Mary the wife of Cleophas. Mary the mother of Jesus is not traditionally listed in this group. Although these are traditions, these traditions are very possible and therefore not unlikely. This is the first trip by Mary Magdalene to the tomb. Jesus did not appear to her on her first trip. Jesus did not appear to anyone on this first trip to the tomb.

B. An angel had previously rolled the stone away.
Matthew 28:2
2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
Matthew 28:3
3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
Matthew 28:4
4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead [men].

Commentary: While the women journeyed to the tomb, Jesus is resurrected. The guards at the tomb are aware of the eartquake and did see the angel involved with rolling back the stone.

C. The Women including Mary Magdalene arrive at the tomb.
Luke 24:2
2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

Mark 16:2
2 And very early in the morning the first [day] of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
Mark 16:3
3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?
Mark 16:4
4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.

Commentary: The women arrive at the empty tomb. They do not see the guards who apparantly watch the women at a distance or in hiding. The women do not know what to think about the empty tomb. It is decided for some reason that is not at all clear that Mary Magdalene should go and get Peter. How and why this decision was made is not part of the record.

D. Mary Magdalene runs to get Peter and John while the other women remain at the tomb.
John 20:2
2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

Commentary: Mary Magdalene leaves to get Peter and other men. She is alone while the other women remain at the tomb not knowing what to do or think.

E. The women without Mary Magdalene speak to one of two heavenly beings.

Luke 24:3
3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
Luke 24:4
4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:
Luke 24:5
5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down [their] faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
Luke 24:6
6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,
Luke 24:7
7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
Luke 24:8
8 And they remembered his words,

Mark 16:5
5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.
Mark 16:6
6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.
Mark 16:7
7 But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

Matthew 28:5
5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
Matthew 28:6
6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
Matthew 28:7
7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

Commentary: After Mary Magdalene has left the other women at the tomb, two angles appear and explain to the women that Jesus has been resurrected. They are instructed to go and inform the other followers of Jesus.

F. The women go to find the eleven Apostles but miss Peter and John as they approach the tomb and Mary Magdalene as she returns after Peter and John.
Luke 24:9
9 And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.
Mark 16:8
8 And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any [man]; for they were afraid.
Matthew 28:8
8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

Commentary: As the women leave to find the disciples, they miss Peter, John and Mary Magdalene as they make their way to the tomb. The male disciples are probably scattered throughout Jerusalem at the homes of friends and associates. It was not unlikely that they could miss each other. Even at this time of day, the streets were probably crowded due to the many people in Jerusalem for the Passover.

G. Peter and John arrive at the tomb and find only linens after the women had already left.
John 20:3
3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.
John 20:4
4 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.
John 20:5
5 And he stooping down, [and looking in], saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.
John 20:6
6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,
John 20:7
7 And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.

Commentary: Peter and John arrive at the tomb and find nothing but the linens. Mary Magdalene seems to have trailed behind these two men and will arrive later.

H. Peter and John leave the tomb and return home.
John 20:8
8 Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.
John 20:9
9 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
John 20:10
10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.

Commentary: Finding nothing at the tomb but the linens, Peter and John decide to go back.

I. Mary Magdalene returns to the tomb and sees two heavenly beings.
John 20:11
11 ¶ But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, [and looked] into the sepulchre,
John 20:12
12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
John 20:13
13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.

Commentary: Mary Magdalene arrives a second time at the tomb. Peter and John have left the site and she is now alone at the tomb. She sees the two angels and asks were Jesus is now buried.

J. Mary Magdalene becomes the first to see the resurrected Jesus.
John 20:14
14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
John 20:15
15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
John 20:16
16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
John 20:17
17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and [to] my God, and your God.
Mark 16:9
9 ¶ Now when [Jesus] was risen early the first [day] of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

Commentary: When Mary Magdalene asks this question she turns to see Jesus who she does not at first recognize. This is the first appearance of Jesus to anyone. The guards over the tomb did not see Jesus but only saw the angel who removed the stone and the two angels who had appeared to the six women without Mary Magdalene who was on her way to get Peter and John.

K. Jesus departs from Mary Magdalene and immediately appears to the other women as they go to find the eleven Apostles and other brethren.
Matthew 28:9
9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
Matthew 28:10
10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

Commentary: Immediately after appearing to Mary Magdalene, Jesus appears to the six remaining women as they journey to find the other disciples. The first seven people known to see Jesus were all women. Although she is not mentioned in the Biblical text, it is highly likely that Jesus also appeared to Mary his mother. This most likely would have occured immediately before or after appearing to the six women who had left the tomb to find the other disciples. The women are also instructed to tell the disciples to go to Galilee. The disciples remained in Jerusalem for at least eight days before their departure to Galilee.

L. Mary Magdalene and the other women tell the eleven Apostles that they had seen Jesus.
John 20:18
18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and [that] he had spoken these things unto her.
Luke 24:10
10 It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary [the mother] of James, and other [women that were] with them, which told these things unto the apostles.
Luke 24:11
11 And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.
Mark 16:10
10 [And] she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.
Mark 16:11
11 And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

Commentary: Mary Magdalene and the other women tell the males disciples about seeing the resurrected Jesus. Many did not believe them. Peter is apparantly perplexed by everything that seems to be happening.

M. Peter returns a second time alone to the tomb.
Luke 24:12
12 Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

Commentary: Peter, not knowing what else to do, returns a second time to the tomb. He is apparantly alone this time.

N. The guards of the tomb go and tell the chief priests that Jesus had arose from the dead after they see the women depart the tomb.
Matthew 28:11
11 ¶ Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.
Matthew 28:12
12 And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,
Matthew 28:13
13 Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him [away] while we slept.
Matthew 28:14
14 And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.
Matthew 28:15
15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.

Commentary: The guards witnessed the events surrounding the resurrection of Jesus. However, they did not actually see Jesus. They did see the angels that rolled away the stone and that spoke to the six women after Mary Magdalene had left the group to go and get Peter and John. They were apparantly hiding at some distance from the tomb when the women first arrived. After the women had left, the guards apparantly assumed that the events at the tomb were completed and they left to inform the authorities who had appointed them to guard the tomb. When the authorities heard of the events at the tomb, they entered into a conspiracy to cover up these events.

O. Jesus appears to Peter
Luke 24:34
34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.

Commentary: At some point in time after his second visit to the tomb, Jesus appears to Peter. This may have occured as he returned to the disciples after his second visit to the tomb.

24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
John 20:25

John 20:31
31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Commentary: Jesus appears to the disciples eight days after the resurrection. Most especially, he appears to Thomas who still had doubts of the resurrection. It is important to note that for some reason the disciples had not as yet left Jerusalem for Galilee. When Jesus first appeared to the six women after they had left the tomb, he commanded them to command the male disciples to go to Galilee where he would appear to them. No time table is given for their departure.

S. Jesus appears in Galilee where he had commanded them to go through the women.

5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.
John 21:6
6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
John 21:7
7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt [his] fisher's coat [unto him], (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.

8 And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.

John 21:13
13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.
John 21:14
14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
John 21:15

John 21:17
17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
John 21:18
18 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry [thee] whither thou wouldest not.

John 21:24
24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.
John 21:25
25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

Matthew 28:16
16 ¶ Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
Matthew 28:17
17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.
Matthew 28:18
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Matthew 28:20
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.
