8)See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception [pseudo-intellectual babble], according to the tradition [and musings] of mere men, following the elementary principles of this world, rather than following [the truth--the teachings of] Christ
My Afrikaans Bible translate the take captive, with take away from God. We must not let people mislead us with philosophies that are not founded on the Bible and what Jesus teaches us. We must dismiss all teachings that pretend that people and not Jesus has the answers to our salvation. This can take us away from Jesus.
