(Full title is Blessed Are the Misfits: Great News for Believers who are Introverts, Spiritual Strugglers, or Just Feel Like They're Missing Something and yes, it's a handful. But this book is so good for anyone who has ever fit into one of those categories and feels on the outside of the 'normal' church culture.)
I'd received the book from one of my eldest daughter's friends for Christmas (who was among a few people who really blessed our entire family after a pretty rough year following our youngest daughter's birth, 5 1/2 weeks in NICU, 7 weeks of half our family being in Iowa for one of her treatments, and another 2 weeks in PICU later...).
I wanted to share an excerpt.
God didn't choose to share the good news of Jesus' birth first with shepherds because they were key societal influencers.
God didn't choose Nazareth as Jesus' hometown because it was a cultural hub, bustling with seminary-trained, catalytic thought-leaders.
Jesus had plenty of options for disciples. There was no shortage of religious experts, well-known communicators, and known leaders in His area...but He recruited some fishermen. This was not an accident.
The first Christian missionary in history was not a powerful speaker with funny stories who had the ability to organize big outreaches at the local stadium. It was a woman (!) with a terrible sexual reputation. A woman who not only couldn't attract crowds, she had to avoid them out of shame.
She had no credentials. She believed the wrong things. She was from the wrong place and part of the wrong race.
Yet Jesus chose her (John 4).
If you look through Scripture, it's rare that God chooses those we normally would. On purpose, so that we shouldn't place such high values on credentials, or upbringing, or status...and so that we can know that there's hope for any of us...all of us.
