if I think on #RemoteWork, its very important that you don't mix up work with holiday.
#RemoteWork in first instance has a lot and mostly todo with work! It's not so much about traveling. Many people have a misconception about this topic: They think, they could travel in a kind of naiv way.
In my opinion this doesn't work like most people think. If you try so: either your travel experience is bad or you loose your focus of your work. In worst case work and travel becomes unsatisfying and your clients or employers unsatisfied. That should never happen.
It's important that you are available for your clients and your team on a your remote destination as you would when you are at home. Your clients or employer should not notice any difference - this is not holiday!
Also #RemoteWork doesn't make a day longer than 24h! Time is costly as always.
For #RemoteWork I recommend to keep the work - leisure time rhythm like at home. Work during the week and travel during the weekend. If you usually work a lot also during weekends its in my opinion okey to travel to another place during the week. But maybe tell your clients and team when you when you are not available. Try to keep a natural rhythm. Keep your team informed!
If you have appointments with your customer on skype etc. make sure you're in time have ALWAYS good internet and a room relatively free from disturbances. Your customers or employers should not suffer from your lifestyle or your bad internet connection. Its not their business to worry about this.
Doing #remotework (in #DigitalNomad fashion) in fact is more difficult as normal work at home, because you have to organize a lot before you change to another location: It's about your new flat/room, internet, coworking space and flights and trains and tickets... Maybe you need a Sim-Card, a car or scooter (in case you are in Bali or India) Thats a lot of stuff to organize and takes a lot of energy. (and time you cannot work!) New flats or apartments never have the same stuff what you have at home. Sometimes not even a kitchen. This can be interesting but is sometimes also annoying.
Often you come into a country you have never been before. So think about it! If you are in the middle of a tough project don't go to another place! Don't travel then. In #RemoteWork work is first - travel and leisure time second.
I am in Paris right now, first time in my life by the way.
The day before yesterday I came with the ICE train from Germany. I had about 4,5 hours high quality work time in the train. Yes, there was even working(!) Wifi and electricity. If you travel by airplane this might be even more stressful for your work focus. I think you loose a lot of time by going to the airport, checkin, security, boarding, etc. etc. Trains might be the better solution for effective working.
Yesterday I was working in the morning until 3 p.m. and then I went outside to see some stuffs in Paris. My work was successful and the afternoon was just amazing. It's spring in Paris! How wonderful. In the evening I added another 2 hours of work and finished a couple of important things. #RemoteWork has a lot todo with being successful with what you do.
Nice article! And you are so right! Sometimes I miss the time to travel because I have so much to do =)
What's your work about? I just started today to built my own digital income. I don't know in which direction I wanna go, but I'm testing a few ways. Have a look if you want: #becomeadigitalnomad
