REPORT ON EXPORT OF GHANA’S TIMBER AND WOOD PRODUCTS, SECOND QUARTER, 2022

During the Second Quarter (April to June) of the year 2022, the export of Ghana’s Timber and Wood Products secured €41,570,881.20 in value from the exported volume of 90,777.434m3 signifying increases of 21.91% and 18.09% in value and volume, respectively as compared to €34,100,409.25 realized from the exported volume of 76,868.555m3 documented in the Second Quarter of the year, 2021.

Out of the One Hundred and Twenty (120) Exporters recorded in the second quarter of 2022, Multimodal Freight Services Limited, Logs and Lumber Limited, Samartex Timber and Plywood Company Limited, K Lovert Company Limited, and John Bitar and Company Limited, were the topmost five [5] who exported Twelve (12) different wood products in Fifty-Eight (58) Species to Fifty-Two (52) different countries and sold to One Hundred and Seventy- Seven (177) diverse Buyers.

The top five [5] products exported were Lumber (Air Dried), Lumber (Kiln Dried), Billet, Plywood (Overland), and Sliced Veneer.
The top five [5] Species with regards to volumes felled were Teak, Wawa, Ceiba, Denya, and Gmelina.
The top five [5] favourite destinations were India, Germany, the United States of America, Vietnam, and Belgium.
The top five [5] Buyers in that same period under review were Shanghai Timber Furnishing Company Limited, Thai Phat International Company Limited, Shree Sagar General Trading FZE, ETS Salaou Hassane, and Neelkanth Enterprise.

Consequently, the overall Average Unit Price increased from €444/m3 in the second quarter of 2021 to €458/m3 in the second quarter of 2022, representing an increase of 3.23%.

Primary Products (Billets) accrued €3,573,577.83 (8.60%) from 11,316.943m3 (12.47%) of the total export of wood products from the second quarter of 2022. The figures indicate decreases of 21.17% and 14.75% in value and volume respectively compared to the timber export contribution of €4,533,557.78 (13.29%) and 13,275.601m3 (17.27%) from the second quarter of 2021.

Secondary Wood Products comprising of Lumber, Plywood, Veneer, Boules and Briquettes formed the bulk of the country’s wood export which generated €36,315,291.53 (87.36%) from a volume of 77,225.705m3 (85.07%) from the second quarter of 2022. The figures indicate increases of 31.24% and 26.82% in value and volume, respectively, compared to the timber export contribution of €27,670,406.22 (81.14%) and 60,893.233m3 (79.22%), from the second quarter of 2021.

Tertiary Wood Products (Processed L/Mouldings) contributed €1,682,011.84 (4.05%) from a volume of 2,234.786m3 (2.46%) to the total wood products export from the second quarter of 2022. Moreover, the figures indicate decreases of 11.31% and 17.22% in value and volume, respectively, compared to the timber export contribution of €1,896,445.25 (5.56%) and 2,699.721m3 (3.51%), from the second quarter of 2021.

In the direction of Trade, exports to Asia/Far East countries (favourite destinations) were 62,446.130m3 (68.79%) valued at €23,813,654.86 (57.28%) during the second quarter of 2022 which indicate an increase of 28.64% and 26.50% in volume and value, respectively, compared to €18,825,463.62 (55.21%) obtained from the volume of 48,544.205m3 (63.15%) documented in the second quarter of 2021. India was the primary destination (in terms of value) for Ghana’s wood products. Exports of timber products to Asia/Far East market includes Lumber (Air Dried), Lumber (Kiln Dried), Billet, Sliced Veneer, Plywood, Processed L/ Mouldings, Curls Veneer in Teak, Wawa, Ceiba, Denya, Gmelina, Mahogany, Asanfina, Essa, Black Ofram, Kroma, Rubber Wood, Edinam, Senya, Dahoma, Koto / Kyere, Sapele, Cedrela, Kako / Ekki, Chenchen.
Ghana’s export to Europe accrued €10,339,241.37 (24.87%) from a volume of 14,259.645m3 (15.71%) to be the second major destination (in terms of value) for Ghana’s wood products export during the second quarter of 2022. The figures indicate increases of 30.01% and 9.58% in value and volume respectively as compared to €7,952,444.57 (23.32%) obtained from the volume of 13,012.926m3 (16.93%) documented in the second quarter of 2021. Exports of timber and wood products to the European markets were Lumber (Air Dried), Lumber (Kiln Dried), Billet, Sliced Veneer, Plywood, Processed L/ Mouldings, Rotary Veneer, Boules (Air Dried), and Briquettes in Wawa, Asanfina, Niangon, Ceiba, Koto / Kyere, Mahogany, Odum, Emire, Denya, Sapele, Hotrohotro / Fotie, White Ofram, Guarea, Edinam, Chenchen, Black Ofram, Kusia, Ananta, Dahoma, Makore.

Wood products exported to Africa Plywood (Overland), Plywood, Lumber (Kiln Dried), Sliced Veneer, Rotary Veneer, Lumber (Air Dried), and Sliced Veneer (Overland) yielded, €3,203,877.87 (7.71%) from an exported volume of 8,006.021m3 (8.82%) in the second quarter of 2022. The figures signify decreases of 15.98% and 16.18% in value and volume, respectively, compared to €3,813,144.90 (11.18%) obtained from 9,551.641m3 (12.43%) recorded in the Second quarter of 2021. Egypt, South Africa, Morocco, and Mauritius were the main destinations for Ghana’s wood products, with the ECOWAS sub-region market having the largest share of 6,599.484 m3 (82.43%), valued at €2,435,526.15 (76.02%) of the total African wood products exported from Ghana during Second quarter of 2022 as compared to €3,074,158.99 (80.62%) obtained from 8,140.200m3 (85.22%) documented in the second quarter of 2021.

Wood products exported to the American market accrued €2,934,343.64 (7.03%) from the volume of 3,846.353m3 (4.24%), making the fourth topmost destination (in terms of value) for Ghana’s wood products export in the second quarter of 2022, which depict increases of 30.44% and 20.47% in value and volume, respectively, compared to €2,249,656.34 (6.60%) obtained from 3,192.879m3 (4.15%) documented in the second quarter of 2021. Exports to America were mainly Lumber (Air Dried), Lumber (Kiln Dried), Sliced Veneer, Processed L/ Mouldings, Rotary Veneer in Mahogany, Essa, Cedrela, Edinam, Cedrela, Sapele, Odum, Wawa, Black Ofram, Otie, Ayan / B'Dua, Ceiba, Asanfina, Denya, Utile, Makore, Ogea.
Wood exports to the Middle East market accounted for €1,279,763.46 (3.08%) from the volume of 2,219.286m3 (2.44%), making it, the fifth topmost destination (in terms of value) for Ghana’s wood products export in the second quarter of 2022. The figures signify an increase of 1.59% in value and a decrease of 13.54% in volume, compared to €1,259,699.81 (3.69%) obtained from 2,566.904m3 (3.34%) documented in the second quarter of 2021. Exports to the Middle East were Lumber (Air Dried), Sliced Veneer, Lumber (Kiln Dried), Processed L/ Mouldings, Plywood, and Billet in Mahogany, Edinam, Sapele, Odum, Wawa, Black Ofram, Ayan / B'Dua, Ceiba, Denya, Koto / Kyere, White Ofram, Chenchen, Ananta, Dahoma, Gmelina, Kako / Ekki, Walnut / Lovoa, Mansonia.
