In a sudden announcement on Wednesday morning, the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife of 18 years, Sophie Gregoire, revealed that they are parting ways. The couple issued separate public statements on Instagram, expressing that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, they have decided to separate.
Married in May 2005 in Montreal, the couple has three children, namely 14-year-old Ella-Grace, 15-year-old Xavier, and their youngest, nine-year-old Hadrien. The news of their separation was unexpected, as there had been no prior reports or rumors about any issues in their relationship.
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) confirmed the separation and stated that Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire have signed a legal separation agreement. The couple emphasized that despite their decision to separate, they remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and the life they have built together. They also requested privacy for the sake of their children's well-being.
The PMO further emphasized that all necessary legal and ethical measures concerning their separation have been taken and will continue to be addressed in the future.
Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, who used to work as an entertainment journalist, had accompanied the Canadian PM on an official trip to India in February 2018.
Interestingly, Justin Trudeau's parents had also gone through a divorce, as his father Pierre Elliot Trudeau had separated from his mother Margaret Trudeau in 1984, seven years after announcing their separation. However, in this case, Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire Trudeau intend to remain actively involved in their children's lives, and they plan to spend time together as a family, even after the separation, starting with a vacation together the following week.
