Magestic arches of an old wine vault

Just small enough to fit

We were in a long-established restaurant built in a former wine vault. Only a small part of the entire restaurant can be seen in the photo, but the sheer size of this wing is enough to make you speechless.

This is where the huge barrels were housed. I can't even remotely imagine how complex the technical maintenance must have been in the Middle Ages.

Let alone can I imagine, with these dimensions, how long and for how many such a barrel was enough. Keeping in mind that wine was drunk almost permanently because of the lower contamination and germ load compared to water.

Instead of water, it became wine!
