RESTING POTENTIAL Grade 11

  1. The k plus concentration is high from the inside and low from the outside. They flow though selective leakage channels because of the concentration gradient (passive facilitated diffusion transport).
    ->chemical force.
    The A minus stays inside therefore making it negative inside.
  2. The positive ions are attracted by the negative charged ions, because they want to return to the electrical gradient.
    -> electrical force
  3. Less Na plus leakage channels are found, as the membrane is less permeable to Na plus. They do the same, but just less.
  4. The potassium reaches an equilibrium.
  5. The sodium potassium pump maintains the membrane voltage.
