Resume Writing

This morning I attended a workshop entitled "The Fundamentals of Resume Writing". I initially thought it was going to be a rather boring class in the fact that it is just writing and formatting and that kind of stuff, which can be a little tough for me to follow (I like to just write things and get my point across) but it was actually quite interesting. Some of the key takeaways I got from this workshop was to make sure my resume was designed in order with automatic resume scanners in mind. This is critical as many of these scanners pickup keywords related to the job description they are looking for. A critical point made is to not use bullets when submitting a resume online as that can cause the scanner to stop. I think the most valuable piece of advice however was to think about what exactly a resume is. A resume is a tool used to market yourself to a potential employer, I think hearing that kind of helped me a little bit get into a more creative mood and helped it seem less boring. When you think of a resume` that way I can imagine how I want to create myself and design what and who I want to be. In many ways it puts me in control of my employment and when I can be in control, that is a great feeling.
