Working in Electronics has made me a neo luddite, and made me lose so much respect for the elderly, the nerdy soyboy gamers, the boomers in particular, and the general public at large all at the same time. But the worst, by a large margin, is the person who is self-described as "technology illiterate". Usually a boomer.
Let me explain something. Mainstream home entertainment consumer grade electronics are easily figure-outtable in a span of minutes. And if you're really not at all intuitive, there's a manual included in plain English. Toddlers use touchscreen devices and television remote controls. That's how user-friendly everything is. How am I supposed to respect someone stupider than a toddler? All cables have distinct ends that only go in one port. It doesnt take a genius to figure anything out.
But despite their own admitted "illiteracy", they also rarely trust the person they ask for help and assume you're either a liar trying to pull one over on them, or perhaps that I am also technologically illiterate, despite my full time job here. In that scenario I must be some masterful bluffer to keep my poker face showing 40 hours a week.
Like they walk in with one or two specifications. "I want a fifty inch tv that does YouTube." So you go about showing them all the 50 inch smart TV's. At each one, they ask "Does that do YouTube?" And when you say "Yes", they then start looking the box all over, until they find the YouTube logo. Then they'll say "Yup. It does YouTube." And point at the fuckin logo, like they're teaching me something.
And you know what? Being a consumer slave buying electronics IS a dumb thing to be. Ideally, a badass person shouldn't know how to use these stupid things. If someone's tech illiterate, that's pretty cool. I bet they're not "fix a car illiterate" or "ride a horse illiterate". But then to be a little consumer loser trying to buy and use the shit while staying ignorant on its use is the height of doucheyness.
There's these self service kiosks for our photo department. Giant fucking 17 inch touchscreen monitors. MicroUSB, lightning and USB-C cables dangle out of the front for you to plug your phone in to pull up your pictures, automatically. There's also SD, MicroSD, and USB ports. Retard proof, right? A dozen retarded fucking boomers a day need you to do it for them. And fail to see how they're loose-upper-lipped moron nitwits, who look like a 2-year old pointing at their untied shoe.
