The global economy is reported to be on fire. Pundants all over television are touting howstrong the economy is. It is doing so well that the U.S. Federal Reserve has started to get a bit hawkish.
All is not as rosy as we are being told.
For the retail industry, the 4th quarter is make or break. Today, we got word of how things were for Canadian retailers.
Canadian retail sales have come out and they are shockingly low - even after bad weather and higher rates on big ticket items had kept surveys particularly low for December.
The headline print was -0.8% MoM (expectations were for no change)
It is very concerning since the miss was so large. These numbers tend to volatile but to miss by so much could be of major impact.
The CAD is getting crushed today on the news.

Thanks @zer0hedge great work.
Well it's bad situation, I saw very few people in the malls in December. Even the Sales after Christmas attracted people only for the real bargains. What the stores normally do is have a few loss leader items, then some still good bargains but profit makers for when they sell out of the best stuff and people still buy something similar. Wasn't happening. If the loss leaders had gone, people left. I know because the pallets full of the second grade stuff were all over the shops. They deliver at regular intervals, and rely on sales to clear space for the next deliveries, as they don't have the storage space these days. I spent a half hour chatting to the stockroom supervisor, as the bargain I wanted appeared to have hidden itself and they went looking for it. Took 'em that long to find it because of the problem just described.

I remember a report from a certain news report on Canada last year in December which showed sales at general merchandise stores, health and personal care stores, electronics and appliance stores all dropping, as motor vehicle and parts dealers had an increase in sales. The decline in sales at general merchandise stores and electronics and appliance stores I believe are the root cause of this downward trend in retail prices.
The crashing of these Canadian sales in the month of December deeply crippled Bank of Canada interest hikes which has influenced the weakening of the Canadian dollar against the US dollar.

Sooner or later reality will catch the market hype and we will have a big " shock" when everything happens. I will be really surprised when everything comes as a complete " surprise" to the FED and renowned economists.
The US retail sales for January were also very bad, so I think sooner or later we will see the next "biggest drop" in Dow. Everything seems very inflated to me. Very curious of the outcome ! :)

I completely agree! I don’t live in Canada, however I can see happening the same here in New York. Everywere I look there are empty retail stores, everywere are signs for lease, or for rent. What mainstream madia and feds are telling us is complete lie and I belive people can see it. I believe that taugh times are inevitable, not only for retail, I think overall the economy. We just have to be prepared and that’s exactly what I’m doing.
Great post!

The media have a significant role on the way economics evolve, because expectations are very important to influence the levels of consumption and investment. So, if they are saying the economy is great then people will trust that information and be stimulated.
Almost every single country is "lying" to their citizens about the fact that the economy is great and doing well, it is doing fine when compared with the recent crisis, but it still has a lot of problems, and many of them are being ignored intentionally.

I think this is not only in the Canadian retail sales but worlwide. The whole world is crying for the economy to grow. Cyptocurrencies which were considered as hope also lost their value over a night. Who to chose ? What to do?
We should always be patient and wait the circle to come back to normal though it looks hard sometimes.
I just see the red graph and start wondering of what could have caused. I do not have a correct answer by now but this is gonna be a topic of research for the remaining few hours.
Besides that, I hope the retail sales market will rise at a given period of time and u expect it to be unpredictable to shaken the market again.

The pair reached a daily low of 1.2626 against a high of 1.2702. Forecasts indicate that Canadian retail sales may record a non-specific reading at zero, supporting recent expectations that the Canadian economy is beginning to retreat from the strength it has gained over the past year.
Although the economic situation in Canada does not reflect poor performance, it also does not indicate that the economy is at its best. Observers have a strong view of Canada that the strong performance of the economy last year is fading away.
It was an interesting topic thank you sir. @zer0hedge

Dollarama seems to be the perfect stock, the worse the economy gets the more people will be pointed towards Dollarama..their stock has been performing very well and pays a dividend as well

I see that it's up to me that the Canadian dollar
Will have a big part of the markets' attention on Thursday as investors in the financial markets follow Canadian retail sales, where the Canadian consumer spending trends can be seen in January, and then the consumer's view of future economic conditions.
The Canadian dollar is receiving bearish data due to the sharp rise in the US dollar, which is receiving a strong boost from data and inflation expectations. The USD / CAD ended Wednesday's trading up to 1.2701, signaling a break of resistance at 1.2700 against the previous close of 1.2646.
A very valuable topic thanks for the great effort
I need your point of view in my simple participation, I hope you like it

I expected this. Mainstream media can never really be trusted. Not long ago i read about the Federal Reserve being a state of panic about the dollars.
Too bad for the canadian retailers.
