The law of Retaliation: Anyone who injuries their neighbor is to be injured in the same manner

The book of Leviticus contains in its last part a compilation of moral precepts that constitute the Law of Holiness, this law can be considered an extension of the Decalogue of Moses (Exodus 20:1-7 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21); and it is summed up in a simple sentence: "Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy" Leviticus 19:2.
Within the Law of Holiness, the Law of Retaliation appears:
"Anyone who takes the life of a human being is to be put to death. Anyone who takes the life of someone's animal must make restitution—life for life. Anyone who injuries their neighbor is to be injured in the same manner: fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. The one who has inflicted the injury must suffer the same injury. Whoever kills an animal must make restitution but whoever kills a human being is to be put to death. You are to have the same law for the foreigner and the native-born. I am the LORD your God." Leviticus 24:17-22.

This law that Leviticus describes us is a form of distributive justice, Aristotle defines justice as "giving and receiving proportionally", the question in the law of retaliation is how the proportion is defined: "fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth." The question is to what extent the application of this law is nothing but a form of rigor, which is a vice. What the law of retaliation seeks is to put a limit on revenge and return the damage received in the same way, let us remember that in ancient times revenge could have no limits as in the song of the sword of Lamech: "Lamech said to his wives, ´Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me. If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times.´" Genesis 4:23-24.
