When Pac-Man for the Atari 2600 was released it was a disappointment. The gameplay was actually ok but the graphics were terrible, even for an Atari 2600 game. The Atari 5200 was essentially an Atari 400/800 computer in disguise so it was a much more capable machine than the Atari 2600 and a better job was done with the port as well. It was as close to arcade perfect as you could expect in a machine of that era. Unfortunately, Atari decided that non-centering analog controllers would be the best option to include with a machine that would mostly have ports of arcade games that used digital controllers. I'm not sure why that logic seemed sound to them but it is one of the reasons the Atari 5200 was a commercial failure and why playing Pac-Man on the Atari 5200 was not necessarily a great experience despite the excellent port.
