Wonder Boy in Monster Land is the second in a series of Wonder Boy games and was released as an arcade game in 1987. It was then ported to the Sega Master System in 1988 and later to a variety of home computers including the Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST and others. It was a moderate success as an arcade game and is considered to be one of the better Sega Master System games.
Wonder Boy in Monster Land is primarily a side scrolling arcade game but it contains strategy and RPG elements as well. This blending of traits is one of the things that made this game interesting and fun to play. While Alex Kidd was Sega's mascot for most of the Sega Master System's life (until Sonic the Hedgehog came along), Wonder Boy was arguably more popular. It makes you wonder how much more successful Sega might have been early on had they been better at naming things.
This game has a somewhat complicated bloodline. The game was released as an arcade game, ported to the Master System, then ported to various home computers. But it doesn't end there.
Jaleco released a version for the Famicom (NES) with the graphics changed and renamed Sayuki. This game generated its own sequel. The Sequel was then released in the U.S. retitled as Whomp 'Em. Hudson Soft did something similar. They changed the graphics and released the game as Bikkuriman on the PC-Engine (TurboGrafx-16), based on the anime franchise. TecToy did the same thing in Brazil, basing their version on a popular Brazilian comic book, Monica's Gang.
The Sega Master System version of the game was released on Wii's Virtual Console in 2009. The arcade version was released on the Wii Virtual Console, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in 2012.
