REVIEW: Dollar Tree Shampoo and Conditioner

in review •  7 years ago

I belong to a group of Dollar Tree (DT) shoppers, crafters and DIYers and happened to see one of the gals make a post about using DT shampoo. I never had tried any of their brand of shampoo. I have purchased shampoo and conditioner at the DT before (usually Suave, VO5, etc) so this Silkience was new to me. They lady in the group said it was great, worthy of comparison to her $16 a bottle salon shampoo and conditioner, etc, etc. I was intrigued.

I thought, "for a buck, I'll try it. I'm not some fancy schmancy get my hair styled in a salon kind of a girl". Literally, I'm not.

In high school, I was part-time in cosmetology school and learned to cut hair, color hair, do manicures and the like. In my entire adulthood (since I entered cosmetology school at the age of 16) I have stepped foot in a salon maybe ten times. I cut my own hair, color my own hair, do my own manicures, wax my own eyebrows- all of it.

So a couple of weeks ago I bought the Silkience Salon Series Pro-Formula Hydrating Shampoo and Damage Repair Conditioner to try. Keep in mind, I will give the product at least seven days before I determine if I like it or not.

The first time I used it, my hair had a sticky feel to it. Now we don't have hard water here- we are on the township's water and sewer service. I could barely get my hair pick through the tangled mess. Hardly any sudsing in the shower. I know that the bubbles/sudsing of commercial shampoos do NOT mean clean. It happens with the additives; either sodium lauryl sulfate or glycerine betaine. Regardless, I had to shampoo, rinse, repeat three times.
"OK, maybe it's just too strong and stripped away some oils. We'll try again tomorrow."

Third washing- no change. Still feels tacky. After blow drying I an my fingers through my freshly shampooed hair and my fingers literally stuck to the strands of hair. Not good. Not good at all. I stopped at two shampoo, rinse repeat cycles.

Fourth washing- only did one shampoo, rinse, then condition. Still felt like a combination of sticky hairspray build-up. Plus, I started noticing how my hair was becoming frizzy once it was dry. As if I had sprayed Aqua-Net (sorry for the 80s flashback) all over my hair.

Fifth washing- change of plans. With my hair still dry in the shower, I used the conditioner first applying only to the ends. Then did a quick shampoo and rinse. No repeat. Better, but tacky to the touch.

Seventh washing- I had given up by now. Just let me toss these bottles. Luckily only cost me two dollars plus tax.

I'm not sure where the other gal thought this was a good shampoo. No indication of a paid endorsement, so I'm baffled.

Guess I'll go back to my Suave. Works the best for me so far.

Great product review @goldendawne!

Lots of facts, very little opinion (I know that's not easy for something like shampoo) just observations. And you know what the ingredients are (and probably what they're supposed to be doing).

No, thank you for the observation. It will help me perfect it for next time.
