The Defiant Ones: Jimmy Iovine & Dr. Dre Story

in review •  7 years ago

If you're into the Dr. Dre scene and everything that comes with him, you gotta check this out! The defiant ones is a four part series that will be premiering these next couple weeks on HBO. Part one aired last night and I thought I wasn't going to be able to watch it because I don't have HBO. Luckily you can check it out for free on Eminems facebook page. Obviously they used Eminems page to promote it because he has the largest number of likes. I hate giving Facebook a plug but shit, it's better than the outrageous fees HBO will charge you.

Part one of the series covers the start of both of their careers. This is prior to Eminems success in the late 90's. I'm sure we will see more of that in parts two or three. In this series we get to see Jimmy Iovines early mixing & engineering days. We also get to see the start of Dr. Dre, in a little group called the World Class Wrecking Cru.

The production of this documentary is absolutely flawless. Obviously this series is largely based on the music so they needed to incorporate music into the program. There is a scene where Jimmy is telling a story when he is mixing a song for Bruce Springsteen. As he's telling you what Bruce wanted him to do, such as add bass here, lower treble here and add echo here. They actually do that to Jimmy Iovines voice during the interview giving you a feel for what the engineers actually do.

Towards the end of the episode they just start diving into NWA. They show some awesome behind the scenes footage of the Straight Out of Compton movie being created. You also get to see some unreleased footage of the actual NWA in the studio from the late 1980s.

For anyone who is a music junkie like myself you gotta check out this documentary. I personally am excited for the Eminem episode. Em has been a favorite artist of mine for my entire life so I can't wait to hear some unreleased interviews, music & stories.

(Part two coming soon!)
