The Ballerina

The Ballerina delivers exceptionally in both audio and visual ambiance and aesthetics. I wouldn't class this as a direct horror, more a mystery thriller. It isn't exceptionally original, following some classic horror tropes, but the details and the richness of the characters and mystery, along with the visual aesthetics fulfill this movie.

You start feeling for her father (Michael Zeigler), victim of a collection of horrific circumstances leading to him and his daughter living in a shanty community within the middle of the forest. It's quite intriguing to see this town of lost souls, and the surrounding characters help decorate and enrich the setting and storyline.

The young actress, Isabella Pullen who plays Sophia is quite brilliant, suffering from severe trauma. Following classic horror tropes, we're unaware of whether what Sophia is experiencing is mental psychosis or something paranormal. The relationship between father and daughter is deep. Despite Hank's deep and unconditional love for his daughter, he harbors many demons and it impacts on his ability the emotionally care and connect with his daughter, inhibiting his ability to assist in her emotional and mental growth.

Hank's only focus is helping his daughter, and despite the fact he would take a bullet for her, his short comings and sometimes complete inability is very human and relate-able. A struggling father with a fierce will rather than a complete dead beat dad.

I understand that the climax of the film was supposed to be emotionally driven, however, I did see most of the reveals coming. This doesn't mean it would be obvious for everyone, or that it makes the film less enjoyable.

Despite her lack of dialogue I absolutely loved Alexandra Pouloutides as Annie who really brought out the eeriness of the film. A stunning young actress I hope to see more of in the future.

A good choice for a quiet day at home.
