I decided to start watching Ozark recently after finishing season 4 of better call Saul. Here is a small description of the series; Marty Byrde (played by Jason Bateman), a financial planner who has to move his family from Chicago to a small rural community in the Ozarks. His wife Wendy and their two kids also move with him, They are on the move when his money-laundering scheme goes wrong, forcing him to pay off a substantial debt to a Mexican drug lord in order to keep his family safe.
This series is an incredibly dark, brave and also very well written. The description may suggest a sort of breaking bad style where a normal man gets involved in drugs and it goes badly and his morals unwind. However I believe the morals of the characters are more cemented and show a greater progression. Marty is not Walter White he is a lot more calm and avoids violence when possible because he understands its not logical. This isn't to say he isn't sly or cunning. The characters themselves are incredibly interesting, they all have their own issues and problems and the way they try to fix them varies greatly. The characters also all have a veil of mystery with them, the show explains certain parts with flashbacks or just subtle drops of detail in dialogue.
Although I've only just watched the first series I don't have a greater idea of what will happen in the next, some plots are slightly predictable but what happens is also very interesting and the outcomes surprising. The only criticism is that I feel the family is too protected from death, the show centers around them for the majority of the time so I can understand the reluctance but genuine fear for their deaths would make it more interesting.
The multiple plots and slow building of plots make this show so great and they center around the idea of decisions and how small decisions can have huge effects, this is emphasized in dialogue especially by Marty and also by the plots that take place. It feels like the plots are designed around the characters rather than the other way round making the plots feel more valid and you can understand why characters do certain things.
I am curious into how the next series will play out, and hopefully they keep it fresh because it has all the elements to be just as good as Breaking Bad or other brilliant dramas. The violence is definitely extreme and used effectively, and is a mix between Breaking Bad in Game Of Thrones with its imaginative yet plot orientated deaths.
I would highly recommend this series, you can watch it on Netflix at the moment as well as the second series. If you've watched the second please don't spoil it and this also applies when commenting about the second.
Let me know what you think of the series and do you believe it deserves higher acclaim?
