New Intel Processors - Core i9 vs Core i9-8950HK

in review •  7 years ago

The Intel Core i9 with 18 cores / 32 threads is the strongest desktop processor. Now, Intel announced it's new Core i9-8950HK for laptops.

Core i9-8950HK is the first Coffee Lake platform processor for the i9 series, which is different from the previous (Skylake) and (Kaby lake) based Core i9 processors. The previous generation Core i9 processors are retailing from 800 to 1400 USD, compatible cheap motherboards cost 300 USD. It will cost you another 1500 to 2000 USD for memory, storage, GPU, cases, etc.

The desktop version of Core i9 has a great performance, and it was justified in a sense because it was equipped with twice the core of the next powerful Core i7 processor. The laptop version of Core i9-8950HK has 6 cores, as the Core i7-8750H for the laptops.

The highest clock of Core i9-8950HK is 2.9GHz, Turbo Boost operation is 4.8GHz and has been greatly improved as compared with the 2.2 to 4.2GHz of Core i7-8750H. The difference in the maximum clock is inferior to the difference between the Core i9 processor and the Core i7 processor. The Core i9-8950HK is the biggest feature that it is possible to officially overclock but it depends on waste heat performance.

According to Intel, Core i9-8950 HK is 29% faster than the 7th generation Core i7 in total performance and power consumption. The gameplay, the frame rate is improved by 41% per second, and rendering of 4K movies 59% faster.

This processor will be installed on Alienware, MSI, Acer's best-selling gaming laptops over 4000 USD. It will be obvious, is there enough difference to distinguish name from the 6-core Core i7 processor.
