MY STEEM-POWERED REEL MOWER - VIDEO & REVIEW

in review •  7 years ago

Check this lawn mower out!

I always kind of wanted one of these, and now it makes more sense than ever. The "old school" ones can be hard to come by sometimes, especially in a functioning condition, and newer ones can actually cost hundreds of dollars. I had been searching around for a while when I found this particular EarthWisemodel.

I found it when I was at a Menard's store up up in Missouri. Since the price was only about $100 USD and since it was brand new, I figured I would give it ago.

At home, I noticed that it was "some assembly required." I was passionate about trying it out soon, so, like a young boy with a set of Tinker Toys, I got started. Since it was easy enough that @papa-pepper could do it, I'll give it an "A+" for ease of assembly. (At the same time I had also picked up my Wood Chipper, and paid a neighbor kid a few bucks to put that together for me... you've got to choose your battles, you know?)

Anyway, one of the things that impressed me about this model is the "bagger." It is easy to attach and detach, and collects the chopped grass very nicely. Here is a video where I share a bit about it.

PAPA'S REEL MOWER

MAKING THE MOST OF IT - AND GETTING THE ANIMALS INVOLVED

Having a mower that does not need gasoline or electricity to function is a big benefit in my book. Ideally, all of my expenses on this machine have already been paid. There is no oil to change, no air filter to replace, and no gas to constantly supply it with.

To make things even better, the fact that it collects the cut grass is amazing. Not only can it be a great mulch, an inexpensive way to add Nitrogen to the soil, and an excellent additive to the compost pile, but it also provides a great food supply for several of our animals.

The rabbits all know the sound of the mower now, and come running to the edge of their cages when they hear it. It is important not to give them too much, but these ones have grown accustomed to a mixture of grass clippings (which also include Clover, Plantain, and Dandelion) and their pellet food. Some people even raise rabbits on grass alone.

In addition to feeding it to our rabbits, the pigs and goats love it too. I simply dump piles of the clippings into their pens and they come running. Feeding animals "real food" is important to me, just like feeding my family "real food" it too. Since I like having a purpose for everything that I use, this works out very well. In the end, this is what I get out of the deal.

  • Being able to mow my yard for free (all expenses paid upon purchase)
  • Free garden mulch
  • Free Nitrogen fertilizer
  • Free compost additive
  • Free animal feed
  • A nice, cut lawn

After years of wanting one, I finally have one. Not only that, I bought it with SBD that I sold, so it is "STEEM-Powered" and funded by my efforts here on steemit. I would highly recommend this type of mower to others. As long as you are cutting the grass often enough to keep it relatively short, it works amazing. If you let the grass get seven or eight inches high, it is too tall to easily cut with this machine.

I know that I'll be using my reel mower for years to come. Have any of you ever used one of these, or do you have one now?

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Good idea.

My husband bought and really enjoys his reel mower! Sometimes he has to break down and use the power mower next door because he has to do both yards in a hurry, but he says he likes the reel mower best because it's so quiet and I think he just likes the feel of it. We have noticed that it usually needs a spritz of oil before use to keep the blades spinning freely and quietly, but that's it for maintenance.

I've noticed the grass likes the cut way better, but it does tend to have a hard time cutting dandelions - the heads seem to bow down and bounce back after you go over them.

You've just inspired me to blow the dust off the ol' reel mower. The trick is to rev it up, get the blade spinning and then run at full speed. Only problem is the grass clippings flying up in your face, but totally worth it. @ironshield

I didnt know they still made them, may be showing my age but a Hand mower was what my dad had and what became one of my Chores was mowing the lawn with a hand mower, back them I really enjoyed it and even did a couple of the older neighbours lawns each week as well, just made it part of my fitness training routine so it was all good for me

We didnt have any outdoor animals other than chickens but we did have a Mulch pit so made good use of the clippings

Brought back nice memories thanks :)

Very cool memories to be bringing back!

@papa-pepper Nice mower. I've thought about getting one of those before - but I think that I mow my grass so infrequently that I'd have a really hard time getting through my tall grass. I did pick up a used Honda mower for $135 this year and it's been working well for me - although it does require gasoline use. :/

I have been seriously considering raising my own meat rabbits. There's a couple in town who used to live in Alaska & they have some for sale. Do you have any posts about how to raise them, what to expect, other considerations to ponder over, etc...??? Thanks!

Really cool man! That mower looks pretty efficient for no gas

Yes ... I have been using mine for 20 years now .... never needed to sharpen once .. I just tighten 2 screws every now and then

That sounds great!

A real reel mower, I see what you did there!! LOl dang i'm on a roll this week. Seriously, never seen one with the bagger attachment! Sweet find!

Yeah, I didn't even realize it had it when I bought it!

You got a great deal on your "self" powered mower and with a bagger too. Around our area they sell these as antiques for a lot more and they aren't even in good shape. Great way to feed your animals and a lot easier than letting each one out at a time to eat the grass in patches. Great job.

Thanks for the encouragement! I thought it was a great deal!

I remember those types of mowers! I had no idea that they still made them. The price is good too. Very nice find!
Cute picture of the rabbits enjoying the fresh cut grass.

I've never had or used one but I definitely want one now! I just have a riding mower that keeps breaking down for one reason or another. I just put a fuel pump on it the other day. On your list of perks for using it, you can add "exercise" to the list. I could definitely benefit from that perk lol. I just have discovered you on here, I will sub ya up on YouTube as well, looks like I will be interested in your material. I just shoot stuff and stack precious metals on my channel lol. Every once and a while I will do a review on a holster or something, nothing real special. I enjoyed your video and love the lil bunnies! Take care!

I must admit I had not seen one of those. It looks efficient.

sure would be nice if they came back in style those push mowers :) my Aunt has one and I use it twice a month I even tried my hand at sharpening the blades for the first time. but no bagger so the grass just feeds the land where it falls :) nice farm animals and mini farmers :)

Great work...thanks instead of rabbits

Your information is very useful! I've learned more from your post: D I'm looking forward to your next post!
And cute rabbits 😝

We used to have one when we still lived in Canada. We had about a half acre to cut and it gave us all a lot of exercise lol. We also used the clipping for feed for our animals. Our mower was a hand me down from the kids Grampa who didn't have any use for it after he had a heart attack. You have a great bargain there @papa-pepper!

The other thing I find cool about reel mowers is that they are self sharpening. If they seem dull, just lower the reel 1/16" to the striking bar. The friction will automatically sharpen the reel.

It should stay sharp for you and the kids for a century with basic maintenance.

@papa-pepper
very good matrial
Thank you

great

We know the real reason you decided to buy it when you did, it was all because of the bag attachment, we know we know. LOL That is pretty cool never seen one with a bag attachment before. The older ones were harder to push, the new ones I hear are easier to use. I haven't used ones since the late 80s and with the large lot we have I am glad we have a rider.

Totally off topic please forgive me for it, but today I was in this small little town and there is a pizza place called Papa Pepperoni's Pizza and I had to take a photo of the sign and photo shop it to customize it just for you. lol

I hope you don't mind me sharing it here with you.

I love how the little peppers saw you filming and ran over with some animals to put on the show. Super cute kids!

That's what i used when i was a kid. I hated cutting grass then and all through my life. Thank God i don't have to cut grass anymore......lol

Waaooo this machine looks damm cool and i agree that it's not required any gasoline for function and this is the best part of this :)

I owned one of those around 4 years ago. I had a tiny yard and didn't need a big gas powered one. It was neat to use early in the year but during the summer I gave up on it and paid someone else to mow my yard. I lived in Alabama with near 100 degree temperatures for most of the one summer and mowing with an old school mower was more work in the extreme heat. I did love it when it wasn't so hot out though.

I have an original old wooden reel mower that is missing the rear roller. Anyone know what that would be worth?

I suppose I should clarify that the handle is wood, while the blade, wheels and related parts are metal.

Cracking I used to love pushing it around. It didn’t have the bag though, you had to go around after the collect the cut grass. This is the way forward though :)

I want one of those. That would be perfect for my fenced in dog area. :D

I have not seen one of those for years!!! Ja, ja
