Marvel's Runaways is now airing on Hulu, and if you love teenage movies, you’re definitely going to love this! Yes, it starts off slow (as should be expected), and does have a lot of cliché concepts, but the real beauty is the blending of all these into the Superhero genre, and doing it perfectly. Unlike Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. which started off with ton of obvious connections to the larger MCU, Runaways is purely stand-alone. In fact, not one MCU reference has been dropped so far –it could as well be another studios show as far as we know.
The first three episodes, which were dropped at the same time last week, did an awesome job of introducing us to the characters –to all the characters, teenagers and adults alike, which was no small feat, considering the number of major characters involved. We get to know their motives, their doubts and fears, and relationships to each other both in the present and in the past, and it’s easy to understand what changed and why.
And we’re introduced to the mystery and the weird stuff going on, most of which we, like the kids, do not really understand yet.
What is The Pride really, and what are they up to that requires sacrifices of teenagers exactly 17 years old? What are the members of the Pride individually, and what ‘skills’ does each bring to the table that forces their union? There’s definitely a lot of drama building up between them. Who is the man locked up and sick in the Church of Gibborim? And the kids... what’s going on with Molly, the youngest of the group? What’s with the raptor in Gert’s basement? And what really happened with both Niki’s sister Amy and Molly’s parents that led to their deaths?
The show does a great job putting in some humor amidst the tension. The kids crushes on each other and obvious differences is absolutely hilarious, and I just have to say, the cast isn’t disappointing so far.
Here’s to looking forward to a great season!
