Movie Review #1 - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - What you choose not to see!

in review •  7 years ago

I didn't know about this movie until I saw its nomination in #Oscars 2018 recently. But when I watched this movie, I knew instantly why it deserved this glory and I'm pretty sure it's gonna bag a few #AcademyAwards for its brilliance in screenplay and performances. This movie dared to show what people generally choose to ignore . This movie not just displayed that with perfection but also in the way people will find it applauding. Before giving my review or presenting instances from the movie, I will give you the overview of the movie.

Overview

This movie is typically about a fight of a mother with Police department to seek justice for her raped and murdered daughter. She tries to bring attention of everyone to her daughter's unsolved murder, especially the chief of local Police department. She does so by renting three abandoned billboards near her home, which in sequence read

"RAPED WHILE DYING"
"AND STILL NO ARRESTS?"
"HOW COME, CHIEF WILLOUGHBY?".

And she does succeed in gaining the attention, but people get angered when the chief officer commits suicide. Even though the officer clearly mentions in her suicide note that her billboards had nothing to do with his suicide, but people and especially a junior officer Dixon could not control their anger and held her responsible. One day officer Dixon overhears a military person bragging about crime he committed similar to this crime, which he later proved to have no connection in this case.

Why it was such a masterpiece?

The best thing in the movies was as title suggests, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The idea of placing your words on one most common things we daily see i.e. the billboards was impressively creative to me.
One thing I always appreciate about a movie is the great performances by actors and trust me, this movie had plenty of them. All the three actors in the movie - Frances McDormand(lead actor), Woody Harrelson(supporting actor) and Sam Rockwell(supporting actor) were amazing and have been nominated in Oscars as well.
Well, it does not end with this. This movie beautifully showed that side of the rape/murder story which people choose to ignore, which is the side of the police department. This movie showed that there are some cases which do not have enough evidence or lead just to be solved by rigorous investigation. In these cases, people generally blame investigation department for their incapability.
As quoted in the movie :

There are just some cases where you never catch a break. Then five years down the line, some guy hears some other guy bragging about it in a bar room or jail cell and the whole thing is wrapped up.

Where you might feel low?

See, if you are tired of watching such justice seeking dramas or do not like them, then you can skip this movie. This movie is for them who occasionally gets into blame game or unknowingly ignore others point.
Saying very honestly, there were very few things where you can find the flaws in the movie. One of those things were when the mother burned down the police station in retaliation to her burned down billboards. I'm not very sure if you could do such kind of thing and get away so casually. Other than this, I don't think there were as such any flaws that might be worth mentioning.

My Recommendation

To everyone who is interested in bringing a little change in their own behaviour regarding listening to others' side of story, I would recommend to watch it. But if you are really not interested in watching any drama movie right now, then you can skip it.
Since it is based on a little sensitive topic, then I would say it's totally upto you to watch and like this movie.
