Tonight I'm having a small cognac after dinner, specifically, the Delamain XO
It had a scent which is typical of good cognac, some wood, but always nicely balanced. This delamain always strongly reminds me of marsipan. the aroma does not betray almonds, but in the flavour they are present from the very first touch on the tongue all the way through to the long and smooth finish.
A great drink to end a long and good day.
Cognac is a brandy distilled from wine. Despite that, the "grande champagne" denomination does not mean that is was distilled from champagne, nor even from wines hailing from the champagne region
The Cognac region consists of 6 smaller regions with different denominations ("Crus"), one of these is Grande Champagne, which is also the name of the district in which it is located in France.
This district is 100's of miles removed from the area of Champagne, known for it's sparkling wines, but ofcourse the name is "convenient"
XO stands for eXtra Old, which means that it should be aged at least 10 years in wooden barrels. I've found some sources claiming that the Delamain Fine and Dry X.O is aged 25 years, which would explain it's smoothness, on the other hand it would be surprisingly old for an entry level product.
Cheers
