If that person behind BernieSanders looses money, then he/she must do it in the interest of the growth of the platform. No one should have to lose money in the interest of the growth of the platform because it sends the message that behind the scenes, some people are privately benefiting financially from the overall growth of Steemit. Why else would they do it? Everyone should benefit from the growth of the platform and so the community should be behind down votes like this and not just some private friend of Ned.
I guess this approach is simple and effective, but it depends on good leadership from above.

There are talks to create a new downvoting system that will not use vested power or at least a separarte voting power so that there is no financial disadvantage to downvoting- On the other hand I think that could open the floodgates for flags.

I don't agree with the fact that anyone can downvote. Maybe have a report button and have it reviewed by a committee. There are too many stupid reason why people downvote others and not a fair system. Opens too many doors for abuse and discrimination. Just not fair to those who are not deserving. Also those downvoting for their own benifit or because they got angry with someone should be simply deleted and banned from the system after committee review. At least give everybody their "Day in court" before allowing others to ruin their reputation. Kinda like judging people guilty before proven innocent. Must be the other way around..innocent until proven guilty. Also,, the committee should be composed of individuals of all levels, races and countries. If nothing else, just add a dislike button that doesn't affect the reputation. Just sayin!

Yes, I was also thinking about mods from all parts of the earth and society. But that is still opening the door to censorship and I find censorship much more dangerous than demoneytization of content that is in one way or the other affecting the entire economy of Steem.

I agree, there has to be a better system with checks and balances. I guess I accidentally flagged a jerk that had already been flagged many times and decided to take it out on me. Called me a liar and kept harassing me on one of my post, even threatened to flag all my post even after I told him I didn't remember ever flagging anyone. Once he made his threat, I simply unfollowed and muted him without another word...

There are two users who got flogged (typo intended) today and I feel it is a loss to the community. Two authors who do a good job and invest a lot in their posts who got flogged for having high payouts.
I think it's unreasonable that some people have the power to erase hundreds of votes by readers and followers just because they have so much more power accumulated. Not to mention how it makes authors feel.

Yeah it is a weird system but without I think we would see atrocities nobody wants to see. It is a double edged sword that needs to get some grinding to work better. When this happens to a small Steemian that is really sad. But here we are talking about a woman who earned over 80$ a day which is something 99% of all Steemians dream of. The way she posted her book in small bits angered the downvoter. I am not defending the flags but I want to point out that we are talking about a power user.
Of course it is wrong if one person finds that her way of publishing her book is generating too much money. On the other hand code is law and as long as we have this system we all have to deal with it instead of spreading FUD and think that Steem and Steemit are thus a failed system. It is not, it just needs more time to improve. And besides, that woman still makes more than 99% of all Steemians, even with the downvotes. This should be considered.

I definitely take your points @flauwy, and ultimately I am also still neutral on this campaign, to an extent. I can see the benefit in punishing real fraud, and potentially even corruption if that's going on. And you're right, if nothing is done about that then we will see people gaming the rewards system in negative ways.
At the same time this woman, to me, is still a smaller Steemit user. She has just over 30k SP, which is nothing compared to the hundreds of thousands or millions some of the other whales have, and the tens of millions controlled by Steemit Inc. She's not even an Orca. And $80 a day is not a lot of money in my mind.
What I would like this platform to be somewhere where top users are making thousands or tens of thousands on a post, or per day, as we scale to Twitter, Reddit or Facebook levels. That's something we should celebrate and encourage, not be jealous of, and not try to cut down on.
We need this to be a platform where people can become millionaires, like they can on YouTube, Facebook or Instagram. Not in my wildest dreams do I think I'll ever get there, and I don't care, it's not why I'm on Steemit. But I still want it to happen for others, because that's how we'll attract the very best talent and content and achieve mass adoption, which is what I think all of us believe Steemit is destined for.

I agree, this is the dream place that can make poeple rich. But 600.000 Steem rewards for 400.000 accounts is just 1.5 Steem per user. This will change when the price rises and I am sure there will be people earning 5 figures for some time until the system starts to self-regulate again.

This woman is what most fiction writers on steemit kinda wanted to be. Trending page, nice payouts...
We no longer want to be like her, because the message gets across very clearly - if you make more than the big boys allow, you'll get punished.
So why should any fiction writer publish on steemit? What do we have to invest energy for when the number 1 author on steemit (in terms of payouts) is getting flogged for being too successful?

I am not a fiction writer but that would not stop me to publish as many other negative things have not stopped me to do what I do here. I still think that Steemit is way friendlier and progressive than Facebook, Twitter and especially YouTube.
Plus there is money to make, even if it is less than what she got before. So I would just continue and see what happens. Usually the flags will go away when the content is good. Being on Steemit is willingly entering an Anarchy society. It is a social experiment.
