Sorry about this post, I don't usually buy into making posts about others....  I have mixed feelings about posting it, but I need to say it once.  I will shut up after that.  (future blockchain regrets)

Please take a moment to review this account.  This account is buying whaleshares and voting on shitposts, and withdrawing the money.  His posts are mostly one photo and no text.  One of them is a picture of a mug, found 2m times using google image search.   He posts his crappy posts, upvotes them using Fuzzy and he then resteems a bunch of posts to bury his activities.

Meanwhile we have some talented minnows who are struggling to get views and attention.  If it were pennies I wouldn't make a fuss about it.

Why do I care?  It makes the site look like shit, look like a scam, and frustrates our new users who are trying, and if reward pool rape is a thing... Well this at least has to be a "Feel up".  I am FOR traffic and eyes being on the site, but that is not what we are seeing here.  I care because the community is not using our power to help distribute rewards.

It is up to the community to determine if this is how and who we want to reward.  I've flagged the open posts on the account and reported it on the whaleshales discord, hoping maybe they would handle it. Since then, the account has posted again.

https://steemit.com/faith/@lykendream/not-matters-what-type-of-job-you-have-get-it-all-you-got-as-if-you-were-working-for-god-amen $46

https://steemit.com/travel/@lykendream/california $50

https://steemit.com/comedy/@lykendream/lol-so-so-so-true $50

There are several more open posts.

If you take the time to browse the account you will see he has been doing this for a while and he knows exactly what he is doing

I am not opposed to the voting bots because we have the tools to fix the problems when they arise.  It is a problem that the community isn't comfortable with down-voting/flagging, flag war... I know, I know, but the system IS designed to deal with it.

Consider it.  The only call to action on this post is to consider what types of content we are rewarding and to consider using your stake to adjust rewards that simply do not make sense.

It's an experiment after all.  You are now free to move about the blockchain.

You make it look easy!

I've blacklisted both accounts from using Hairshares.

Thank you! Much appreciated.

It's a whale using a fake account to upvote his own shitty posts.

The whales make more than that in curation rewards, they don't have to do this silly stuff.

These scams are getting out of hand. I was only just starting to recover my voting power after dealing with someone others who were abusing. I would much rather use my voting to reward good posts. Someone like @dan has more than enough power to deal with this kind of stuff if he delegated some of his SP to Steemcleaners or a similar service for helping with this kind of abuse.

I would much rather use my (quite limited) voting power to highlight the good, as well. And yes, Dan could easily delegate a million each to Steemcleaners and SadKitten and it would probably go a LONG way towards making this kind of crap unprofitable enough that the perps would take their junk elsewhere. And he's still have more than enough free spending money to fund new projects...

Yes without a doubt.

A quick check on where some of the big delegations go shows that priorities could well lay elsewhere. It feels like some of the big-walleted people stopped caring a long time ago.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Dan has no responsibility to the community in my opinion.

Yea, he is a huge stake holder, but it's not benefiting him one bit, and he isn't affiliated with steemit anymore.

Steemit inc or the "elected representatives" called witnesses have all the responsibilities to do what is right and look out for the future of the platform.

I honestly can't imagine what would happen if @dan actually delegated in this manner and his SP ended up flagging the accounts that @ned recently delegated to for self voting.

I would feel more inclined to do something about this- if indeed anyone was able to do something about the worst abuse on the top of https://steemwhales.com/trending/ without having their steemit career ruined.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

I agree that is a huge problem as well, the community is going to have to address it I fear. I have a feeling my account will be ded soon. :) - Trending page

Agreed that dan is no longer a part of the community and I don't have any expectations he should try to fix anything here.

This is the first and last time I ask for help on steemit.
@whatsup flagged my post.
I am really upset!
And he doesn't want to answer my comment.
So can you, since you seem to understand the subject explain to me why is my post, with my photo flagged?
Do I look like a bot or what ever...
I write so little and earn even less, but I love steemit.
I spend hours reading posts and learning,
I don't think that's fair..

Okay, calm yourself, I did respond. Now you are just going too far 3rd comment now. I responded within a half hour. Upsets come and go, and I am sorry for the misunderstanding.
The flag has been removed and I upvoted BOTH of your other comments.

@whatsup, why you stirring up all kinds of minnow shit? much love from the @runridefly family.

Thank you.
I am sorry for the drama.
Hope to see you all in better occasions!

I followed you @tamacvet. I hope to see you post some things about the legal profession. I'm just starting my adventure into law school :)

Thank you, and sorry for all the comments.
You will see, when you finish law school you feel the need to defend yourself even more :)
I will post about it, but our law is completely different than anywhere else!
I wish you good luck, it's a hard school :)

Thanks, I'm looking forward to it!

These sorts of scams, added to the circle-jerks at the top, combined with the slack curating and voting by so-called followers, and the sycophants bending over for the big wallets, don't bode well for the future of Steemit. They also make this a less friendly place, not just less interesting financially. I am less and less sure I want to be a part of this.

So, I am also going to address that in my next post. It is time the community takes responsibility to fix these issues. If we want to fix it, we are going to have to bite the bullet and use the tools we have. THE FLAG.

Hi @thecryptofiend, The community can't have it both ways. I hate spending my voting power on the negative as well.

If we want the site to be decentralized, don't we all have a responsibility to keep the site clean?

We do but the problem is few other people seem to care which puts even more burden on those that do. Then people get exhausted and stop bothering. Some probably just leave.

It's really a nasty prisoner's dilemma. We each are incentivized to reward ourselves, whether that be by taking our time we would be flagging to curate or produce content, or more directly by vote buying. The amount you lose from flagging someone is greater than your expected gain by cleaning up the network ever-so-slightly, so only a few people spend the time to do so. Same thing with curating new/created, same problems.

Even if we were to separate voting and flagging power as I have written a post suggesting a couple months ago, we'd still be left with the problem of it failing to be a rewarding task, either internally from a mental perspective or externally from a community perspective.

Exactly and one most also consider the social cost - nobody wants to go round creating ill will and even legitimate flags can do that.

It is a major challenge. I can only think I have to use my VP to protect my investment to some degree. Those who do not see the problem, are simply not using the site.

Please post a link to your article.

PS, to put this in perspective, this post, which has highlighted a scam, and created much discussion will likely not earn what this guy got for just one of his shit posts.

Thanks for asking.

Here's a link to the article you referenced.

Unfortunately, this article "resulted in / continued a" sequence of bad blood that lead to much argument in the comments of some other users blogs and more flagging/witch-hunting later.

However, what I found much more interesting was the article I actually referenced in the above article here.

This latter article continues to be a daily problem, but I have seen no will to combat it and have decided the personal attacks and mental stress of trying to assist with it are not worthwhile. (ie, I used to flag these and post in the comments how it was an exact cut and paste with the pictures reformatted to look different from 5 days ago).

Interesting ideas and well presented.

Or at least suffer from ever increasing fed-uppedness. I know I do.

:) fed-uppedness... I have it.

I'm trying to get people motivated to fight spam with rewards. What do you think?
https://steemit.com/spam/@iamgrateful/fight-spam-earn-rewards-issue-001-8-18-17

@whatsup, I'm such an idiot. I read your post and then I accidentally upvoted him 100%. I was thinking I was flagging him, but it was a sweet ass upvote. I don't have any experience flagging, so I just burned a 100% upvote and I feel real dirty inside.

I used my flag yesterday for the first time. I was scared like a little bitch ass punk, but I had to flag the plagiarism.

Steem On!

lol, with your skills the dude is going to be rich in no time.

You crack me up. :) I hope you removed the upvote. :)

I flagged his ass 100% after I burned a 100% upvote. You crack me up more.

"and if reward pool rape is a thing... Well this at least has to be a "Feel up". "

Excellent post. I particularly chuckled at the quoted bit.

I have proposed solving this issue by having a separate flagging power, so that the opportunity cost of dealing with these issues becomes much smaller. I don't know what else to suggest, and that idea was not very popular, as it was my only post to receive a flag.

This does make me sad, I am a pensioner and really love steemit because it has made my brain a little better and every cent made here gives me a chance to live a little better. My posts might be silly, but I love kids, therefore I really work hard to do a post for todlers and small children. I never realised how difficult it is to teach them something that they would understand . I dont do to badly but not nearly that much. Thanks for this post.

I agree entirely... and there's more here than immediately meets the eye... this may be one for @sherlockholmes and fraudulent accounts crew to investigate... little poking poking about reveals a connection to this account:

https://steemit.com/@lykencrypto

Which pretty much looks like a "content mill." Look at the number of follows/following since MAY??? And some of the images from the account you're calling out here appear to have been lifted from the bigger account's YouTube channel.

SO there's some pretty large scale exploitation going on here, as far as I can tell... and that's just for 10 minutes of poking around and cross referencing language/expression similarities.

I am glad you mentioned the connection, I also noticed it. I didn't want my post to be a total tattle-tail post, so I tried to make it more about the flagging element. Thank you for your comment.

I did flag... and it's a shame we have to burn voting power on something like this. But we all have to do our bit if we still want there to BE a Steemit by this time, next year.

Thank you very much. You know how hard it was for me to go down this path. It has to be done.

You've done your homework.

Do we need to rally the troops for another @stellabelle PURGE NIGHT! ? :-)

*my vote power is still recovering at 50%, but it's worth it.

Yes, I think we do!

I could not agree with you more. This does seem like a misuse of bot voting to get some extra help on your posts. But spamming bad content and just upvoting it with bots is not good for the future of this platform. I think the users have to take more responsibility and flag those posts so it does not overrun the platform. Hopefully, in the future, Steemit management will also take action on this matter.

Thank you for pointing out this problem. Great post. :)

Have a great day. :)

Iduno what you are whining about man, that's a friggin awesome mug. No, thanks for brining this to more people's attention! You rock!

Thanks for this post @whatsup - as a minnow I find it so disheartening when i have worked for hours on a post, only for it to get not views or upvotes. Then I stumble on posts that are of one image, like you say, and it is not even an original photo. It really isn't fare (but I won't let it make me give up)! Another thing I have noticed lately is how many "intruders" are getting away with copying posts and then posting it as their own - this is definitely where i pull out the red flag! Thank you for standing up for the little minnows, I'll remember you when I am a WHALE! :)

I agree it's very disheartening putting lots of work into a post and get a couple of votes and sometimes even less views than that. Especially when you see nonsense posts getting loads of votes from bots. These issues need to be fixed on steemit or i fear a new contender will come in and take over. I haven't flagged anything yet but will reserve some of my voting power from now on to try and do my part cleaning up the system.

So interesting.

You make it look easy!

I can't get enough of this.

45$ for this photo? I saw another dude doing the same and he got upvotes from blocktrades and his posts where 75$ for just a photo that he copy-pasted...

Being a hard working content creator and minnow I'm glad to see you and other's taking care of the system itself. This is highly significant from my vantage point. Keep up the good work!

-Dan "world travel pro!"

There are several points of view, because we also see post in treding and today, by cumidades. Or because the user has a very high SP. Yet every day many users with different interests are registered, and I believe that more than 70% is for money

I'm here for money, and I consider this post to be creating conversation about what is good for my investment.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Thanks for looking out for the community. When you brought this up to me I did have a talk and was assured that the message would be understood.
However it seems that it's not.

Unfortunately we cannot tell people not to sell their whaleshares or beyondits since they earned or won them legitimately.

Please understand that we can't control the actions of the people who invest in the service either. Especially when they don't care or understand.

At this point it's not a matter of him being unjustly rewarded because he is investing in a service where the community- who legitimately earned or won these whaleshares or beyondbits- are being rewarded. His ROI is shit tbh.

This is simply a matter of perception concerning the integrity of the service and the platform- to which I think the community WOULD be very willing to resolve.

Unfortunately some major stake holders have beat down any insurrection with force or threat thereof.

The platform is rife with voting rings and rewards abuse. Check out the self vote rape on some top rewarded people here. https://steemwhales.com/trending/

Nobody will resolve these issues because they don't have the power and fear retribution. And others will even argue "It's not against the rules".

small fry like this will keep popping up because they see how easy it is to get away with when steemit inc, witnesses and society alike won't fully denounce the actions.

We need solid mechanisms in place to discourage this behavior. Yet there's no profit in that. There is only the promise of a fruitful future- to which nobody seems to care.

I understand your perspective and appreciate very much your engaging in the conversation. I was very careful not to attack or accuse whaleshares, as I understand they are operating a business on the blockchain and I am grateful to smart people who know how to build stuff.

It would be nice if they helped clean up their mess.

I understand we have much bigger problems on the trending page, I guess maybe addressing that one may take me out of the game.

I appreciate that you're not attacking or accusing whaleshares. Unfortunately aside from civil dialogue, there is not much we can do about the issue.

It would be like asking randowhale, minnowsupport or booster to flag or blacklist people who "don't deserve the upvote they paid for"

I truly wish that Fuzzy could clean up steemit's mess. I'm sure he would if he actually had the ability. He is selflessly doing amazing things for a lot of people. I believe it's miles more than any other person on steemit.

The reality is that we only have the power to provide people with lessons and opportunities, yet have no way of controlling how they act. Nonetheless, the person has been spoken to and understands the risks of continuing this behavior.

We will see how it all turns out.

I am not interested in debating the pros and cons of Fuzzy. I am interested in the survival of the platform.

I've interpreted this as a hostile comment :-(
I hope I'm wrong in my assessment.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Hostile? I said I didn't want the post to turn into debating Fuzzy. lol.
I have never spoken to him. I have no personal experience with him.
I wanted the post to be about the investors and flags and power of the community, not about fuzzy.

I am annoyed nobody from Whaleshares wants to help fix the problem.
I also help minnows every day... Maybe I am just doing it wrong. Have a nice night.

Sorry, I was pointing out that he has benefited the platform. Since you specifically mentioned him in the post I thought it was fair to say he is not responsible for people's actions.

I am affiliated with whaleshares and I have attempted to fix the problem. It's true that I am nobody, but at least I've tried.

Have you asked randowhale to remove the vote or flag him?

I didn't ask whaleshares to remove their vote either.

I could understand if at least the things they poster were original content, however bad. Paying for whaleshares and then using them to promote your own content I can understand, but doing it to just grab quick bucks from copy/pasta is pretty abusive. Upvoted and resteemed to hopefully get some visibility on this. Always appreciate your level headedness about these types of things @whatsup.

Thank you, I don't worry too much about other people's content, but I am growing really frustrated with the one photo, 0 text posts. They are just messy. Last night I went through 10 posts on the new page, and 3 of them were 1 photo, no text, tons of results on the google image search.

Some of these are certainly spam, but we need to be cautious moving forward and realize that content may be posted from alternate sources such as Steepshot and not fit the long form blogging we've grown accustomed to on Steemit. I think Steemit.com needs to address sorting & filtering content based on popular source platforms.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Interesting point, they will have to figure out how to mark them. This is not the case with this person. He is posting any shit picture he can find.

This is a game-changer.

I agree, I do single photo posts quite often, but always accompanied with some words, and they are always my own original content. I get very nervous when it comes to flagging because I have spent a crap ton of time and effort on building my Steemit rep and SP and I don't want to lose it, but if we don't all chip in I suppose we will all lose everything eventually, guess I need to grow a pair and start flagging :(

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I'm going to take a look and then flag. I have been using my flags a lot lately because there is just so much crap out there.

Me too, I hate doing it, but the problem is getting big.

I never flagged anybody ever but there might be big changes coming in my attitude and what I will do with my VP to keep our platform clean from "thieves"

I agree. I don't think there is another option left.

I completely agree. I was really opposed to being on the cleanup squad. I see by the way the site is headed, that I can no longer expect others to clean up for me. I understand the desire to not have to do it though.

I hear you both ! I just wish for a kind community and fairness among members. How can this work when the founders create the biggest mess first of all.....

Yeah, that happens time after time. A little bit frustrating.

If it is frustrating flag it. ;) Or not.

Flagging one guy won't change the problem. It should be fixed as whole. Somehow.

Each of us using our stake to promote and demote what we think adds value does in my opinion move the ball forward. :)

Tons of resteems from months ago. Really makes it hard to find the garbage.

It looks like he knows exactly what he is doing.

@whatsup,
That's a shame, but most of people are doing such kind of things! Personally I hate upvote on my own posts! Yeah I stopped that, I am not a big whale, just a minnow!
Thank you very much for sharing such information. Honestly I am not big enough to fight against those frauds! Anyway I will take a look!
The way you think - feel respect!

Cheers~

Spam and Scam in new form once again :(

The reason this seems like a hard problem to solve is because some of the biggest whales do it themselves. I saw a video yesterday by Jerry Banfield* where he showed how the top earner on Steemit earns thousands by having the same 4 accounts upvote his posts and comments, just before the 7 day active period gets over so most people dont even notice

Like literally, this guy has 3 word comments with a $60 payout, upvoted by the same 4 accounts.

*Yes, i know that a lot of people believe that Jerry Banfield himself is a scammer, but this particular video of his at least looked legit, and the user in question definitely is doing very sleazy things.

So if you have someone with 72 rep doing these things, there is no reason the smaller guys would stop doing it.

I also saw jerrybanfield in one of his videos promoting the idea of self voting which i also think is doing real damage to the system.

yeah, jerrybanfield isn't any saint, and even in the video, he skirted around calling these accounts out, he was like "i'm not saying its good or bad, i'm just showing this to you"

With self-voting I have mixed feelings, there does have to be a reason to hold Steem Power, and how ever a person got it, it is theirs.

I agree it isn't good for the long-term health of the platform.

Ok, that makes sense now on why its written into the system. Well maybe it should be restricted to just posts and not comments. Or maybe have a limit based on a percentage of your SP.

You've got the Midas touch.

Absolutely amazing.

This is phenomenal!

I think, at the least, self-votes shouldn't be 100% votes. If we put the cap at say, 50%, that would mitigate this problem a bit.

Or maybe, make it so that you have to pay a fee to upvote your own content?(which is then included in the curation rewards) I mean, technically you are promoting your own content, which isn't free on any platform other than Steemit.

Great job explaining.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

I have to ask why did you flag my post?
It's my photo, and I shared it..
I really don't understand?
And I am very disappointed. I didn't ask a single person here to upvote me or to follow me.
I upvote and comment on posts I like.
I write about things I'm interested in, and share MY photos!
I agree that there is a responsibility to clean steemit, but I don't think it's fair that you use your power to flag my work that doesn't offend anybody.
Please be so kind to explain.
Thank you.

Thank you for asking, when you post your own photo, please add some text.
I removed the flag and left you a note over there. If you update the photo and reply, I will buy you a randowhale to make up for my mistake.

No need, just don't want to be on anybody's "black list".
Have a great day!

How on earth did God give you $47 on this picture post -

ye its not god its just abuse of bots and system :(
good thing there is now many minuses at his posts and he will be in minus and then close his account

Unless the bot's name was god, I agree. :) Your comment made me laugh.

Word UP! I see a lot of those

I am adamantly against corporal punishment and I'm adamantly against the idea of using the flag. Having said that..... wow that guy is really using a lot of plagiarism to get his $50.. I see a lot of minnow spam and scam and I also see a lot of trending pages full of worthless $500 posts so I don't know which is better. I really hesitate to use my flag, however, that is pretty terrible. I hope that guy gets what's coming to him.

Understood. If you considered it and decided against it, my post still accomplished my goal. I just wanted people to consider it.

I can see the problem here. A lot of new users could see this site as a scam and get discouraged to put anything of quality here because shit like this is getting big rewards. It definitely needs flagging because it's not doing anything good for steemit and the community.

It could also spawn copycats pulling the same bs. We don't want a platform full of this garbage.

Last night, I went through new, about 3 out of 10 posts were 1 photo or meme with 0 text.

It will kill the site pretty quickly if it is left unchecked. I've been ranting about this for some time. Glad to see your promoting the cause.

It will not flag it's self. Don't we all have a responsibility to do a bit of cleaning on the site.

Yes we are all using it so we should all be keeping it clean.

Thanks for spotting, and casted DV to last 7 posts, my power is only 30ct :( This to me is indeed reward pool rape in such a way it needs to be countered. Thanks also for reaching out to Whaleshares. I reported it in Steemit.Chat to a channel with some whales. I noticed Steemcleaners did something to the last post. They maybe able to help further as well. Also @spaminator may be able to help, with his leadership the community has taken a multibit spam network down a couple of days ago.

Thanks

I hope he gets flagged into oblivion. Did my small bit.

Thank you.

that is shame . while many of the steemers are going with some wonderful time with other bloggers. these people making almost spams. this can be describe in many ways, but we can;t accept those things b;cos if neither quality contents in here steemit does not live longer . but luckily we have plenty hundred of steemers in there. so better future with Steemit.

Sounds sad, specialy because people like this are draining the reward pool with there copy paste junk

It's out of control and a travesty!

Especially, when it's a Communist flag, comrade
