I watched the Golden Globes last night, but this piece isn't really about the awards show, it is more about its host. I was actually happy to see that Gervais was allowed to host an awards show again, but I can't help but wonder if all of his satirical remarks were scripted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. He kept referring to his duties as being his last. At one point, it was remarked by an HFPA member for him to put it in writing.
While I enjoyed most of his comments, Gervais gave the impression that he didn't want to be there. If this was an act, he was brilliant. However, Joaquin Phoenix's acceptance speech for his win in "The Joker" seemed to have more bite, but unfortunately, much of it was bleeped. I couldn't tell if Phoenix was in Joker-mode or simply high, but his commentary was very interesting, or at least what I was allowed to hear.
Gervais made a remark about the celebrities not talking politics, which I agreed with. However, this didn't sit too well with Billy Porter. Of course, it didn't stop some of the comments from entering into some of their speeches. I am sure that there were many others hoping for a win to voice their opinions.
Like I said earlier, this piece isn't intended to be about the show, but the host. While I enjoyed the show, I thought Gervais was very monotone in his delivery and needed to be more upbeat. Like I said earlier, maybe this was his shtick for the night, but it left me with a feeling of disinterest. I like Gervais. But should an event lower its standards by ending with the host telling the crowd to "fuck off."
