Hezekiah was king of Judah, this king was righteous in the eyes of God, and in the face of the difficulties that occurred during his reign, Hezekiah's trusted in the Lord, Hezekiah was a king and not a tyrant: "Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him" 2 Kings 18:5.
During his reign Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, invaded the kingdom of Israel and destroyed it, deporting all its inhabitants.
As a consequence of this Sennacherib set his sights on the Kingdom of Judah and besieged the city of Jerusalem. Hezekiah, faced with the threat of the Assyrians, did not put his trust in weapons but in the help of the Lord, and for this reason, he had a favorable oracle from Isaiah: "When he hears a certain report, I will make him want to return to his own country" 2 Kings 19:7. Hezekiah resisted the siege of Jerusalem, and the Assyrians retreat to their country.
It was during these times, the Bible tells us, that Hezekiah fell ill, and it was the prophet Isaiah who told him that he would die. It was so that Hezekiah put his trust in the Lord again and prayed: "Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD, ´Remember, LORD, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.´ And Hezekiah wept bitterly" 2 Kings 20:2-3.
The Lord listened to Hezekiah and added another fifteen years to his life and blessed him by delivering him from all his enemies.
Hezekiah was the demonstration of the importance of good leadership in times of difficulty, good leaders sustain their people. Tyrants who only seek to increase their wealth plunge their people into misery, while a monarch inspired by God brings out the best in his people. With Hezekiah, a teaching of the Bible is fulfilled: "For a throne is established on righteousness" Proverbs 16:12.
