Shark Week Preview! Ripley's Aquarium of Canada

in ripleys-aquarium •  7 years ago

I have been pretty open about the fact that I am not a very good photographer. I don't even think I rate as an amateur. Maybe I am over estimating myself but I believe I would officially rank at whatever designation is directly below "amateur photographer". Perhaps it is "novice". Perhaps it is "guy who shoots pictures with one hand while trying to carry his kid's ice cream cone in the other."

Ok I lied. It's my ice cream cone. And it's not one cone. It is two. And they are waffle cones filled with 3 toppings each.

But back to my lack of photography skills.

Last week my wife, ten year old daughter, twelve year old son and I visited Canada. One of the places we visited was Ripley's Aquarium of Canada located in the heart of Toronto.

As I walked around the Aquarium, I kept thinking to myself, "I wish one of the talented photographers from steemit were here to take pictures of all of these amazing creatures." But they weren't. So I did my best with my pocket sized Sony Cybershot.

Screen Shot 2017-07-05 at 10.35.29 AM.png
I did not zoom in for any of these. I don't think I know how... OK I know how to do that but these creatures were so close, I never had to.

When I was a kid in the 1980's, there was a TV show called Ripley's Believe it or Not hosted by Jack Palance (and his very creepy voice). The show was based on a "magazine" that reported amazing yet real stories from around the world.

I'll go with not on this one.

Even as a kid I always watched the show with a skeptical eye. As a result, whenever I hear the world "Ripley's" I immediately think whatever comes next will be sensational and at the very least bordering on fake.

Therefore, when I saw we were staying near Ripley's Aquarium of Canada, I pictured a small storefront with a huckster outside barking at people to pay two bits for a glimpse at a mermaid. I figured we would see "real" two headed or perhaps headless fish, sea monkeys and maybe an aquatic snipe or two.

Instead, here is what I saw...

This photo was not taken by me. Here is the link to the photo posted on the web.

This was not the Ripley's I was expecting. Instead, I was treated to the most incredible Aquarium I have ever seen.

The aquarium was HUMONGOUS. It was so well organized, that it was impossible to miss anything. I found that simply amazing.

As soon as we walked in, we could see a children's area on a level below us.

Knowing that the kids area would soon be swamped, we raced past all of the other exhibits so that my kids could pet the horseshoe crabs, climb on the play structure, and get a little too close to a shark. They loved it!

After several minutes we doubled back to the entrance of the aquarium and began our leisurely stroll thorough one of the most amazing places I have ever been. I could easily fill this post with 100 pictures... but I will stick to the highlights.

The aquarium houses just about every type of fish I could imagine. Although all of the exhibits were amazing, a few definitely stood out.

When I first saw this Jellyfish tank, I honestly thought it was a video screen.

Screen Shot 2017-07-05 at 11.18.26 AM.png
They were real.. and they were spectacular.

After staring in awe at the jellyfish, we proceed to stumble across a large tank that was conducting a scheduled feeding. (We were very lucky to witness this).

In addition to the other hands on areas in the kids' section, we also discovered a tank of shrimp that would "clean" your skin.

Screen Shot 2017-07-05 at 11.27.43 AM.png
The shrimp "clean" by eating the dead skin off of your hand. Yum!!!

The highlight of the aquarium were the sharks. There were so many sharks that I thought I was in a Sharknado. (I am very sorry. I believe every American has had a message planted in their subconscious which requires them to make a Sharknado reference every time the word "shark" is used. If it makes you feel any better I will punish myself by watching a Tara Reid movie.)

Screen Shot 2017-07-05 at 11.39.30 AM.png

If that were the only shark we had seen, it still would have been cool but that would be silly. This place was loaded with sharks. They were also housed in one of the coolest things I have ever seen.

The aquarium features a huge transparent tube shaped tank. They provide a moving walkway to stand on while it slowly takes you through the gigantic tube. During the trip, patrons come ridiculously close to many sharks.

Let the Sharknado commence!!!

Again, none of those required a zoom. The sharks were that close. This was lucky for me because I may have dropped my ice cream had I needed to zoom in.

As a cherry on top of the experience, there is a tube that passes through a tank filled with fish and... sharks!!!! Kids can crawl through the tube and experience the feeling of being surrounded by sharks. As you can see, adults can also climb through... if they are dumb and want to feel like they are surrounded by sharks.

I had a ton of fun and learned quite a bit about real fish at the Ripley's Aquarium of Canada... believe it or not!

Yo hanshotfirst,

I consider myself to be in the category that is above amateur but shy of pro. The main reason for this is that i'm interested in taking better pictures -- even with my cell phone -- and have done a little digging. So, here's some things to keep in mind:

  1. Composition: when you capture an image you are composing that image. You are putting a frame around what's important and choosing what's foreground, background, featured, etc. So, move around, get closer or pull back. If there's a branch sticking out of someone's head -- move so that it no longer looks weird. Get people to stand in a spot (if you can) so there is a pleasing background. Make sure there is not TONS of headroom or lots of floor... FRAME what's important as tight as you can, but not too tight. And finally, if it's people your taking pictures of, get them closer together and move-in on them, and, talk to them so their expressions change. Say funny stuff and keep snapping (digital makes editing a freebie).

Light: bright blaring sun is not good for photos. Get in the shade for more balanced shots. Try to use a bright wall as a bounce (a reflected light source that is not in the shot). But mostly, have the light source at your back so your subjects are illuminated properly and not dark against a bright bg.

(More) framing: take pic of:

  1. people's heads and tops of shoulders
  2. Heads, shoulders and bodies above waist
  3. If you're going below waist then take in entire bodies i.e. Don't cut off feet (ouch!), but again, don't include too much space...
4(bonus): look at other people's photos you like and emulate them, all the while thinking: how did this photographer choose to 'COMPOSE' this photo.

5 (super-bonus): the rule of 9's
Imagine there is two lines running up and down and two lines running side to side -- like a big tic tac toe laid over top your frame. There will be 9 boxes, but where the lines intersect (@ 4 spots) are areas of focus. Many prople just put a pic of their wife (for example) smack dab centre of shot, with feet cut off, too much sky and a porto-potty in the background. If you're at a cool spot and want to place a subject, get them in fromt of cool spot, beging to compose, think about pilitting your wife's beautiful face at, say, top left intersection point so there's a little bg to the left 1/3 and more to the right 2/3 and then move around so anything prominent in the bg is at one of the two i spots on the right.

Hope this helps. There's is obviously lots more to consider, but i find above rules-of-thumb helpful. Of course feel free to disregard any and/or all for a different effect.

Cheers! from thedamus

pardon the crazy numbers...i am "composing" on my phone and in-flight editing is difficult...

Wow! Thank you for all of those tips! Have you done a post about this? I think its a great topic. Maybe toss in some examples?

Good idea!

If you do. Please link it here.

Very attractive post... very nice place ripleys aquiarium in canada... this place has looted my heart.

@hanshotfirst underwater world is just magical! all those colors and creatures :D and what is interesting we still have no idea what lives deep under water (like in Mariana Trench). Cool post!
If you have a minute please check my new story about Multimedia Fountain Park in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. I'm sure you will like it!
All the best :)

Yes I have heard that there are still a great deal of species that have not been discovered in the oceans.

yes, ocean monsters :P

Maybe the pics are not alays as sharp as you would like, BUT; the animals and especially the sharks are super! Maybe not that many people culd make them better if they see such an amazing / impressive animal !

Thanks! I did the best I could. No matter what, I have a cool reminder of what we saw.

Sorry I meant to vote your comment but accidentally voted my response

@hanshotfirst
Thank you for showing us such resplendent photographs
I'm lucky to see shark like this because of you
I've never seen any of them, they look stunning and dangerous too.
God bless you
Keep clicking keep steeming

My pleasure! It was a really cool aquarium.

@hanshotfirst - Amazing shark picture considering you took in with your Sony cybershot, held in one hand while balancing two waffle cones with 3 icecream toppings in the other! Very nice. I love the way your narrate your experiences. You have a certain flair for story telling. Thanks for sharing. Upvoted!

Thanks! I just like to have fun while writing.

Menacing! I love that the water has a green hue to it. You captured it really well.

Thanks!

Ripley's aquarium from Canada. Ripley from Alien???
Sharks are scary :(

LOL. Different Ripley. That one is much tougher.

Awesome shots! I live right beside the aquarium during the school term and it's one of my favourite places in the entire city to visit. I can't count how many times I've been there to check out the exhibits!

The open ocean and walk through tunnels are my two favourites :D Glad you and your family enjoyed your visit!

That's cool. Do you have a year long pass? Do they give you a discount because you are a student?

beautiful shots! upvoted you are defo a good photographer man

Nah. But But I get to remember the experience. that is good enough for me. But thanks!

This makes me both miss Canada and scuba diving! Awesome post & great photos! Thanks.

LOL. It was an awesome trip!

Luckily nowadays, it is the camera that helps out us poor point-and-shooters.

Your photos are fine. Makes your blogs much more genuine and real.

Thanks!

I would hate to fall into that pond of stingrays.. :D How big was that pond? Is it miniature, or does it just look like that because the picture was taken from far?

It was pretty small. There were a ton of them though.

Looks like quite the experience, I visited a tropical zoo the other day, and man did I have trouble taking decent pics of their fish.
Those things move so fast I was sweating just to get a pic lol :)

Good point! I was lucky to get what I did.

That aquarium looks awesome! I used to watch Ripley's all the time myself. It was such a great show with so many interesting people. I'm glad you got to have a good time and take us with you! Hopefully I'll get to visit this someday and have just as much fun as you did :)

Thanks! I forgot there was a new version of the show with the dude who played Superman on TV.

Excellent images of that great aquarium, thanks for sharing!

Thank you!

Man, you were an hour west of me, I would have loved to meet you guys. Less without a ton of traffic.

Bummer!

Yeah I knew there were a bunch of Canadians who I would have loved to meet. Now that I have seen how awesome it is, I wouldn't mind going back for a weekend without the kids.

I hope to meet you man, but you know that. I just have ..... challanges now I never had before in a few areas of life.

I am about to cross 2 major Milestones on Steemit today and 3rd major one in a day or 2!! One has already been crossed by the time I woke up today and I think I am a couple posts away from 15k posts!

(:

--

20K SteemPower is also a day or 3 away!

I know you know how tough it can be on here, I missed the easy/glory days of May/June/July last year when you throw a post up and it made $500 or $1k.

My luck LOL

Well, you still have those days now actually because of your awesomeness.

Hahahaha!!!

Not bad. Some changes in aperture, ISO and focus will increase your skills. Learn to play with them.

I really should. One of the things I love best about steemit is learning more about the art of
photography.

If you want to learn how to change the background of images, I have added a tutorial of it. You can check it.

"They were real.. and they were spectacular."

+1 Seinfeld.

This looks very similar to the Ripley's Aquarium in Gatlinburg, TN. Similar shark tunnel, petting aquariums, everything. Good shots.

Glad someone caught it!

That must have been an awesome trip. My last time I was by a Ripley's museum it was by Niagra Falls back in high school in the early 90's. This new building in Toronto is a major upgrade! With cameras, the only one I've used lately is the one on my iPhone. My wife pulls out her Nikon and her pictures put mine to shame. But atleast I can use the crop feature to make my pictures better!

LOL. That's right! Technology to the rescue!

Thank you for your sharing
Photos are amazing.
I want to visit there

Thanks! I like your pictures better! I hope you can come sometime and maybe bring your family. You go to so many cool places. I think they would love it!

I think so.
My family would like it

Thanks for the post. I live just outside of Toronto and made my visit to the Aquarium when my niece came from England. The Aquarium is the first big tourist attraction to be built in Toronto for many many years. It's an awesome place and I love the fact it was made with the visitor in mind. I would encourage anyone coming to the city to make a visit it will be worth the price of admission. When the sharks swim overhead like in your pictures thats a highlight for sure.

You live in a beautiful area! I loved it!

Thank you for the tour! I was in Toronto last August with a ticket to see the baseball game. I happened upon this aquarium and stood in line for a while before realizing I wouldn't have enough time to see it before the game. Smarting with failure I left to see the game. Thanks to you I know I would have preferred the aquarium.

We were staying 2 blocks away from the stadium. We went to 3 innings of a game... I did enjoy the Aquarium more. Next time go for the fish!!!

Nice post, wish to go there once.. my kids would love it

Hey my friend! You keep insulting your photography skills, but those are some cool shots! I went to the Ripley aquarium in Myrtle beach, seriously cool place, although I have to say the haunted house is by far the coolest thing I've ever been to outside of disney/universal etc.

Just getting caught up on some voting and commenting, hope you're having a fabulous week :)

You did good! Nice pictures hope you had a blast!
