What’s that smell? Was that you?

We are in Rotorua, and one thing you notice when you are here is the strong smell of sulphur.

It’s a volcanic region with lots of steam pouring out of the ground in various places. Geothermal activity is so active here that it is used as a means of generating electricity.

There are also hot pools you can soak in (we plan on checking them out tomorrow) and loads of touristy things to do.

We hooked up with a mate of mine who live just up the road, today and went to Rainbow Springs. It has certainly changed a lot since I went there as a kid.

I remember a trout pool with a glass window where you could see the trout. They still have that, but now there is so much more. And they appear to be doing a bunch of development work still. It’s good to see something like this still growing after all these years.

We then had a bit of a picnic in a park where there were lots of holes with steam coming out of the ground.

Then we took a leisurely drive around the city. It’s a nice place with a really nice bit of parkland next to the lake. I’m hoping to go for a run through it tomorrow.

So far the holiday is going well. The Air B&B we are staying at is really nice. They are a Russian family from Siberia with three young boys. They could not be more hospitable if they tried. They have made us feel very welcome.

I’m really looking forward to tomorrow. We have some big adventures planned, weather permitting.

I will be following for sure I'm about to document my freedom camping holiday from Feilding, Manawatu to Dargaville Northland over the New Year period. Me and the dog will be doing it rough but responsibly in the van. We will visit and review the coolest takeaways on our travels, swim in the rivers and talk to and document any interesting characters on the way. Looking forward to seeing more of your trip and sharing mine to you

Oh, awesome! Be sure to check out the Rangitikei, my home turf. You could try camping at Vinegar Hill. it's a lovely spot. And stop in for a coffee in Mangaweka - the cafe is a DC3 Dakota! (an old airplane)

I'm from Feilding so I'm quite familiar with the area. Not going to go up the guts in the country but rather trek slowly up the east coast and the probably come down West through the Forgotten Highway.
