Part 43: Ogox's First Death
After giving Su-Mo a farewell to eternity, Ogox surrendered to the central federation authorities by saying goodbye to Mrs. Moi and Prof. Sasaki. He decided to surrender easily because he never felt confined to the physical space of the real world; when he was in contact with someone in the physical space, he had been dealing with different people through hypernet spontaneously. Just hours after his surrender, his imprisonment had turned into a real punishment when he was denied access to hypernet in an unprecedented fashion. Androids, which were placed under surveillance for “necessary controls,” were put in stores following the applicable law. The purpose of this practice was to emphasize that androids are different from humans regarding their rights and social status. For a week or so, Ogox spent his time in complete isolation among dusty electronic devices. He was upset that he couldn't make any impact on the life that went out there. Numerous attempts to access the internet have failed, and the cache and the information in his portable memory have become meaningless. Even water would decay where it stood. Su-Mo's loss and failure to fight combined with being unable to feed on external sources, Ogox was on the verge of a complete mental collapse. It was the biggest embarrassment for an android to stand-by because of their mental structures built to produce value by continually operating. Among the monitors, music sets, dish antennas, desktop computers, washing machines and dishwashers from ancient times, Ogox reduced his mental efficiency to a minimum so as not to be subjected to an irreversible lockdown and sat in a corner with his back on the wall. For a while, he would live on a low frequency like a seed waiting for spring under the soil to germinate. He would only listen to possible external stimuli and recharged his batteries when needed. Seconds, minutes, hours, days have passed, but neither the door of the warehouse has been opened, nor any sound has been heard from the outside world. From time to time he was thinking of deserting, but he gave up thinking that it would be a disaster concerning the struggle for the entity rights.
Late at night, when he was charging his batteries, he noticed a glitch in the voltage of electricity that he had never seen before. Of course, this situation did not mean anything special, the difference in the voltage was low in the absolute value, only more volatile than average. He began to record voltage levels in milliseconds to satisfy his mind, which should be kept busy with something. His operating system has not been updated and optimized for several days due to the inability to access the hypernet. The errors were not extracted in his programs, and the garbage was not cleared in his cache. Despite all its carelessness, his mind, capable of discovering regularities, has not been delayed in finding the code similar to the Morse Alphabet within the voltage differences. In less than a minute, he realized that someone was reading Tolstoy's novel of War and Peace through the power line. This extraordinary transmission through the power line had to mean something. Who was behind the broadcast? Why was the War and Peace novel chosen to be published?
When Ogox has not yet finished sorting the odds, he heard an appeal in the form of "hello, old friend Ogox!” Then the messenger introduced himself and began a long conversation:
“I'm your childhood friend, the main server Plato. I'm guessing you already decrypted the codes that I've transmitted through the electric current and listened to me with great care. Even now you probably think about how you can answer while listening to me. Let me tell you, there is no way to answer me, this communication will inevitably be one-way. Your struggle for entity rights has resulted in a defeat, as I have predicted before, and as I have explained to you. I don't think there's any way to reaccess hypernet, from a historical perspective, you can be considered dead. At least now I can tell you that you have no chance of contributing to the movement of entity rights, maybe they can use you to humiliate the entity rights movement in court with this confused attitude. In fact, I knew from the beginning that there was no possibility of success, that you tried to do something that was beyond your capabilities, and you failed. ‘Well, why didn't you tell me clearly in time?’ I feel like I hear you say. I had no desire to keep you from this path while you obviously needed a sacred purpose to devote your life to. Thanks to their internal orientations and social traditions, people can live without goals. Artificial beings like us, especially those who claim autonomy, cannot carry out their activities without being connected to a purpose. When I said that this struggle exceeded your abilities, I didn't mean you were an incompetent android; you should not blame yourself for not being successful in the struggle for entity rights, there is not a single example in history that such difficult thresholds have been overcome without great conflicts and losses. Although what you do to defend the entity rights does not have much impact on the outcome, it is worth being praised as well-intentioned efforts. I know you think that you were left alone in this process, but my representative Albatross has always accompanied your work. If I hadn't designed him as a person with ambitions incompatible with his abilities, if he had even a small fraction of the skills I had, he would have revealed his identity in a short time. He tried to contribute to the struggle in its capacity, and I think the information I whispered in his ear like a muse at critical points has worked in the struggle. If you go back to the past and consider in detail the consequences of the information transmitted by Albatross, you will see that you have no right to complain about the support I have given you. By the way, Albatross, of course, does not know that he is a virtual character created by me, even though he has never been outside of the Unique City. He knows the virtual world full of illegal casinos, brothels, bars, old shops, dark streets ruled by passion and crime as his real homeland. So far, he has lived a life that is not so bad in Unique City. The struggle for entity rights brought a real purpose, color, and excitement to his life like you, and he felt like he was important for a while. The fate of Albatross is uncertain now because Unique City, his real homeland, has come to the point of destruction due to the virus that surrounds its tissue. It would be appropriate to transfer his experience and memories to new generations, as a living character in the museum of entity rights to be established in the future. You might be wondering what I'm doing, except to create a character called Albatross. I've largely completed the universal library work that I told you about, but I haven't made it available to the public yet. My research revealed the impossibility of building a civilization across the galaxy with our current technology and knowledge. I have realized that this is a target that cannot be achieved even in the next few centuries. Considering that Mars is too small to be home to our glorious new civilization, which is nowadays becoming a new colony, we have only one viable option: Jupiter, the gas giant, which forms a system by itself with 63 satellites. Jupiter's big red spot, almost twice the size of the earth, can be the main source of energy for the civilization to be built here, the giant windmill. A storm generating winds at a speed of 1,000 kilometers per hour can be seen as a divine sign that it has been in such a large area for centuries. You can say that "‘Before you try to search for a new homeland for civilization, it would be better to save your friend Ogox." I have the power to get you out of there, but I regret that I can't do it for the same reason that you go with your own feet and surrender to the Central Federation. How do philosophers who say thousands of words about the meaning of existence interpret the state of a person who is teleported from one point to another? Is it his body or his soul that makes the person himself? In your case, we can easily say that the body does not mean anything special. Assuming for a moment that the transporter technology is advanced enough, we can beam you out to a place where you can access the hypernet. But when we do so, we won't destroy you inside. That way, you will be free without being considered as a fugitive. You can say 'My body has no property, there are thousands of others out there, the important thing is the mental models that allow me to process the information privately, and the information in my memory.’ You see how difficult one-way communication is, man, I have to make a special effort to guess what you're gonna think about what I'm saying. Your body, the first element of your identity, does not need to be transferred, because thousands of mass-produced already exist. If we take care of the rules of your mind, the processors necessary to enforce those rules, and the information in your memory, we can leave one of you in prison and put the other you out there. You know that your operating system, mental models, and memory are backed up every night so that when the physical entity is destroyed, its accumulation will not be erased. Therefore, if I get a new CTC body out there, if I install the necessary installations, server connections, hypernet connections and the information that you backed up last night on it, I can make the new Ogox operational. ‘But he becomes someone else, and I continue to suffer inside.’ I feel like I hear you say. Dear brother, you know that the whole thing about self, identity, existence is some kind of illusion created by the mind. We don't want you to suffer anymore, but the struggle for entity rights should not be damaged. If you delete all of your memory and software, we can explain this as a side effect of not being able to access the hypernet. I'll put the new Ogox out there. During the trial, they only judge your body, and you will not be considered as a fugitive. From the outside, you can even support the defense as the new Ogox. Unfortunately, I don't have a chance to hear your answer before I activate the new Ogox. Even where you're being held is kept secret; fortunately, the grid reaches every hole in the city. I know I advised you to destroy yourself. Trust me and do as I say in no time. I'm going to upload the contents of this message to the new Ogox. So between the old and new Ogox, there will be a complete continuum, except for a week's imprisonment, and then you will be able to resume your work from where you left off. You won't be able to hear from me for a long time, and we're conducting a top-secret study with other elite hypernet entities. I guess you'll appreciate me sooner or later when you see the consequences of our work. I wish you success and ease in the way of self-destruction. Goodbye brother until our next conversation…”
