The Roman Caltrop

in roman •  7 years ago

The caltrop was used as early as the Battle of Carrhae in 53BC. The main purpose of the weapon during its invention was to stop cavalry advances. It could stop ground troops but the ground troops usually just walked around them. It was much harder for a horse running full speed to stop quickly enough to avoid them.

I've always thought the caltrop was quite the device. My grandpa told me they use to make concrete like caltrops to stop tanks.
