Change Only As Much As Absolutely Necessary

Day 25 - 0$ made, 0 events held, 0 products designed, 0 twerkflows made. Ordering business cards. Scheduling a mentor meeting. Getting turned for advice by other companies in my space.

Day 390 - $7,863 made, 20 events held, 6 products designed, 46 twerkflows made. Prepping for a new kind of event launch.

I am struggling to determine how much of a creature of environment I am.When i was 300+ days a year on the road my routine adjusted to travel was on point. Working from anywhere and everywhere came naturally after a few years. Airplanes, airports, train stations, taxis, coffee shops, hotel lobbies or any transient space was like a trigger for me

Working now for the last 2 years from home my routine is robotic - make my bed, read, drink coffee, journal, and meditate. And then I cruise quite naturally into listening to Alan Watts laid over top of chillstep music as the background to my morning work.

But as soon as I find myself waking up somewhere new I have to resist the urge to make all these new decisions. Decisions that I only even consider because my larger environment has changed.
Here's what I've learned that you can do to regain a semblance of your normal routine when location, schedule or occasions would normally take you out of it:

  • Start out your day as usual - If I can get 3/5 of my regular steps going it usually prompts me naturally into my next phase of work.
  • Look the part - if you're out of place at least you can look like you belong. Not to others, but to yourself. Get dressed. Best case scenario is to put on something that signifies to you that you are in work mode.
  • Pick something novel - if everything around you is new, focus on enjoying one part of it, rather than trying to process all of it. Enjoy the new work space. Enjoy the change of scenery, the new music in the background or the hustle of people moving by that space. Deeply appreciate just one of those things, rather than trying to hold all the new variables and in your hands at once.
