I've come to the odd realization that J. K. Rowling is one of the more important influences in my life. This is despite the fact that I've never read any of her books. I've read a few of her essays; but, I've never read her novels.
To be completely honest, I don't like fantasy as a genre. I don't even like the Lord of the Rings films.
Still, I grew up with the push from the Right to have the Harry Potter novels banned from libraries because of the depictions of wizardry and witchcraft and all that dark stuff. I think I can be forgiven for being 13-years-old and not understanding the nuances of free speech; but, I still thought that the controversy was dumb.
Now that I'm a fully grown adult, I should understand the philosophy of free speech. In recent years, the push to cancel Rowling is coming from the Left under specious accusations of her being a "TERF" and a transphobe. Even actors who have made generational wealth from her work have disowned her like cowards.
The reality of my connection with Rowling is that I don't care about her writing. I have no love for her novels. Still, I've spent a lot of my life defending her. I've spent that time on her because neither people on the Right or the Left understand what free speech is about.
I would love to spend less time on her; but, you keep provoking this shit.
