In an extremely close and unexpected race, Democrat Doug Jones has defeated Republican Roy Moore in the Alabama special election. Jones and Moore were competing to replace Republican Jeff Sessions, who left his seat in the Senate to become Attorney General. A Democrat has not won the Alabama seat in the Senate since 1992. Jones won by 1.5% with 673,236 votes to Moore’s 652,300, but Moore is not conceding defeat yet. He instead has vowed to call a recount, stating: “this isn’t over.” About 1.7% of voter wrote in the name of a candidate not running, which very well may have cost Moore the position.
