The Cathedral of the Savior on the Blood in St. Petersburg was built in memory of the Emperor Alexander II. In the distant 1881 in the place where the temple was later erected, tragic events took place. On March 1, Tsar Alexander II went to the Field of Mars, where a parade of troops was to be held. As a result of the terrorist act committed by the people's volunteer II Grinevitsky, the emperor was mortally wounded.
The appearance of the cathedral
The architecture of the temple is a sample of the late stage of the evolution of the "Russian style". The building is a collective image of the Russian Orthodox church, focused on the samples of Moscow and Yaroslavl XVI-XVII centuries. The great influence on the exterior of the temple was provided by the architecture of the Moscow Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed.
From the outside, inscriptions have been made on the temple, where the achievements of Russia during the reign of Alexander II are underscored.
The decor of the building uses a variety of finishing materials - brick, marble, granite, enamel, gilded copper and mosaic
Interior of the cathedral
Inside the temple is a real mosaic museum, the area of which is 7065 square meters. The mosaic was created in the studio of VA Frolov according to the sketches of more than 30 artists, among whom were VM Vasnetsov, FS Zhuravlev, MV Nesterov, AP Ryabushkin, VV Belyaev , N. N. Kharlamov. The mosaic exposition of the Savior on Blood is one of the largest collections in Europe.
Located in the historical center of St. Petersburg on the bank of the Griboedov Canal near the Mikhailovsky Garden and Konyushennaya Square. The height of the nine-headed temple is 81 m, capacity is up to 1600 people. It is a museum and a monument of Russian architecture.
